[opensuse-autoinstall] SUSE-12.3 weirdness
I'm trying to get autoyast working with OpenSUSE-12.3. The actual OS installation seems to work fine, but after the reboot (when it does a bunch of post-install stuff), its consistently hanging at: Preparing System for Automatic Instlallation Install required packages Checking for packages required for runlevel ---> 33% Or more accurately, it just stalls. The system isn't hung, I can switch between virtual consoles, but the actual installation never progresses at all. Load is 0.00. I started poking around in the newest log in /var/log/Yast2, and I see the following at the bottom of y2log: ########## 2013-03-06 05:33:47 <1> dhcp-172-16-170-244(3533) [Interpreter] I guess this simply means 4 isn't supported out of 123456, which is the plain truth. I'm not sure your issue is related to the runlevel -- I got the same lines in a successfully installed 12.2 system. What does your /var/log/messages say? Are there some unexpected messages about the network?

I didn't any tests on 12.3 (including alpha, beta, rc) yet. It should be still supported, though.

My guess is, there is currently no openSUSE maintainer for autoyast or (s)he has a more pressing workload. Best regards Robert -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-autoinstall+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-autoinstall+owner@opensuse.org

On github (project yast/yast-autoinstallation) it says, Thomas Fehr is now the autoyast module maintainer. He is not, however, a member of the Documentation team (as per opensuse web page). There seems to be some transition still going on. The autoyast users Documentation is included in the 12.3 documentation source. However, on a quick scan the Documentation on users.suse.net/~ug seems to be more current (some text about subvolumes for 12.2 and sles11 sp3 is missing in the 12.3 doc source). I don't have Uwe's XML source, so there may be more.. I did some looking around, and I now think the most current version is in the yast-autoinstallation github repository, commit from Oct. 25, 2012, commit no. 724d5dc4ad. Did you try to minimize the number of packages installed? Is there a difference in the output of rpm -qa | sort ? awk -F'|' '{print $3 "-" $4}'

This looks like you hit bug 801878 of bugzilla.novell.com. One of a lot of fallout caused by systemd integration. Unfortiunatley it is not fixed in time for 12.3 release.
As a side note, is autoyast still being actively maintained? All of the links on Uwe's website ( http://users.suse.com/~ug/ ) don't have any references to 12.3, and the OpenSUSE Yast Autoinstall wiki page is now gone ( http://en.opensuse.org/YaST_Autoinstallation ).
After the sad loss pf Uwe Gansert I took over temporary maintaienrship of Autoyast last summer. As such events cause always a major disruption there is mostly some friction during and after takover. Maintainership of the package will be hopefully taken over by a new permanent maintainer soon. The documentation part of Autoyast is migrated do our documentation department. So newest Autoyast docu will be available from http://doc.opensuse.org/projects/autoyast/ (there is still an outdated version there but this will be updated soon ;-) The Wiki page was probably lost when we migrated our wiki some time ago. So far I was not even aware of this page. It seems like maybe its unhappy about something related to the runlevel? My autoyast.xml has the following: ######### <configure> <runlevel> <default>3</default> </runlevel> #########
Is this no longer supported? The last version of the documentation seems to suggest that its still valid: http://users.suse.com/~ug/autoyast_doc/configuration.html#CreateProfile.Serv...
This looks like you hit bug 801878 of bugzilla.novell.com. One of a lot of fallout caused by systemd integration. Unfortiunatley it is not fixed in time for 12.3 release.
Thanks for your reply. Yes, that's definitely the bug ( https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=801878 ). I hate systemd. Yet another solution in search of a problem. I guess I'll just have to hack up some alternative mechanism for enforcing the runlevel. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-autoinstall+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-autoinstall+owner@opensuse.org
I have posted a fix/workaround for the hang you report at https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=801878#c9 You could try to provide the patched file using the <files> section. I cannot guarantee that this works though... I personally built an updated yast2 package on OBS containing the patch and it works for me so far. I started poking around in the newest log in /var/log/Yast2, and I see the following at the bottom of y2log:

Thanks. I'm confused, what should I be applying this patch to?

Sorry, my previous suggestion about adding a <file> into your profile will not fix the problem, because these files are written only after the problem occurs. Hence, try adding the following chroot script to your AY profile: <scripts> <chroot-scripts config:type="list"> </chroot-scripts> </scripts> This script adds SYSTEMCTL_OPTIONS="" in front of the call to /sbin/runlevel which causes the hang in my case. It *should* work like this, although I have not tested it myself :-) Please consider this as a workaround until an updated yast package is available. There may be a more elegant way to fix the problem. Best regards, Joschi Brauchle On 03/25/2013 11:20 PM, Lonni J Friedman wrote:

After the sad loss pf Uwe Gansert I took over temporary maintaienrship of Autoyast last summer. As such events cause always a major disruption there is mostly some friction during and after takover. Maintainership of the package will be hopefully taken over by a new permanent maintainer soon.
What did I miss? Did he change jobs or did he -- I certainly hope not -- actualIy die? I noticed his online activities have been nonexistent since the end of August 2012, but since he had talked on this list about having less time for AutoYAST in the foreseeable future, I assumed that was the reason for his quietness. Please feel free to answer me in private if you don't find this topic appropriate for the list. -- Kind regards Christopher 'm4z' Holm / 686f6c6d "We must respect the other fellow's religion, but only in the sense and to the extent that we respect his theory that his wife is beautiful and his children smart." --H.
