Installation Server and CD Creation
Hi list, I am not sure this is the list to rant about the "Installation Server" YaST module, but here goes: I have installed SLES 9 (RC5 - I was told that it was the GM) on a host and want to make a CD for auto-installation. I did that with SLES 8 and it was a mess because of "multiple installation sources." With SLES 8 i ended up dropping SLES and just using UnitedLinux plus my own packages. OK, now on to the problems I have with SLES 9. a) I have tried different combinations of packages (CDs) in a single or different repositories. You can see the directory listings at the bottom of this mail (appendix A). 1) Both SLES and CORE - one package repository First I tried making one (Installation Server -> Change -> Add -> Source Name: "all9" -> [X] Use ISO Images Instead of CDs -> select each of the six ISOs) with both SLES 9 and CORE 9. I am able to select this in Software Source Media (it identifies itself as "SUSE SLES Version 9"), but I am unable to install any packages from it. Only the installed packaged are shown in Install and Remove Software. 2) Only SLES Then I tried making a repository with only the SLES CD (#1). I used the same procedure as above, but called it "sles9" and only selected the first ISO. When I select it in Software Source Media (it also identifies itself as "SUSE SLES Version 9"), I get the exact same result as before: No installable packages. 3) Only CORE Then I tried making a repository with only the CORE CDs (#2-6). I used the same procedure again, and called it "core9". When I select it in Software Source Media (it identifies itself as "SUSE CORE Version 9"), I am able to install packages from it. But - obviously - I can only install the CORE packages. 4) Both SLES and CORE - two different package repositories If I select both the package repository that I named "sles9" and the one I named "core9", I am still able to install the CORE packages, but still not the SLES packages. The result is the same, no matter which is first in the Software Source Media list. b) When I use the CD Creator YaST module, I get an "Error while writing settings" at "Saving CD Creator Configuration," no files are copied to the selected directory and no ISO file is created. This is the same, no matter if I select Packages by "Package Manager" or "AutoYaST Control File," and no matter if I select CORE, SLES or both as package source. I have tried to locate online documentation about this, but so far I haven't found any. Am I looking in the wrong places? I hope someone can help, or tell me where to go looking for help about this, as I would like to get started with using SLES 9 in our production environment. OK, now on to the problems I have with SLES 9.
Indeed, SLES8 was our first experience with the multiple source method and it was not easy to setup.
a) I have tried different combinations of packages (CDs) in a single or different repositories.
If you are not installing from scratch, you have to add CORE and SLES seperatly. You cant just point to one URL (The top of the source) if you want to install packages in a running system. "SUSE SLES Version 9" is the right name, It comes from SLES9 CD1.
Does not work, SLES CD has just a few packages. "SUSE SLES Version 9" is the right name, It comes from SLES9 CD1.
Right.
Ok, this is a known bug. you have to mkdir /var/lib/YaST2/cd-creator/
I have tried to locate online documentation about this, but so far I haven't found any. Am I looking in the wrong places?
I hope someone can help, or tell me where to go looking for help about this, as I would like to get started with using SLES 9 in our production environment.
Anas
Best regards, Morten

Hi Anas, Thanks for your reply. On Wed, Sep 22, 2004 at 08:53:07AM -0400, Anas Nashif wrote:
If you are not installing from scratch, you have to add CORE and SLES seperatly. You cant just point to one URL (The top of the source) if you want to install packages in a running system.
But the problem was that I could still not install SLES packages:
4) Both SLES and CORE - two different package repositories If I select both the package repository that I named "sles9" and the one I named "core9", I am still able to install the CORE packages, but still not the SLES packages. The result is the same, no matter which is first in the Software Source Media list.
mmj gave me a hint that solved that problem though. I added sles9/SUSE-SLES-Version-9/CD1/ as my SLES package source, instead of sles9/ (which contains symlinks to boot, content, control.xml and media.1 plus a yast directory). Should I not be able to use sles9/ as my source, just as I use core9/ ?
I get an "Error while writing settings" [snip] Ok, this is a known bug. you have to
mkdir /var/lib/YaST2/cd-creator/
Ouch, that's a nasty one... but it solved my problem! Thanks! Another few thinks I had to do to get an ISO: - Install mkisofs (yast2-cd-creator does not depend on it, and it does not give an error message to the user when it cant execute it!) - Change the order so SLES is above CORE in the Installation Sources list (otherwise cd-creator can't find the boot files, and it does not give an error message when it fails to copy them!) Success! 2004-09-23 17:36:17 <3> flimmer-new(20411) [bash] ShellCommand.cc(shellcommand):73 132289 extents written (258 MB) I will try to move my SLES 8 AutoYast configuration to SLES 9 and make a test install tomorrow. But now I have an ISO file, so I can get on with the project. Once again, thanks. Best regards, Morten -- Morten K. Poulsen <lists.suse.com@afdelingp.dk> http://www.afdelingp.dk/
