We are using <kernel>kernel-desktop</kernel> to install the right kernel and it works just fine. Our problem is that this kernel is not grub's default choice for booting into stage 2. But now that you mention it: We do not use <do_online_update>, because the packages in our repo are already the newest version. Is this bad practice?
