What Linux to use?

mobo   Giigabyte  GA-K8N
ram    1Gb  400 Mhz  DDR
hdd     2 x 80Gb  Maxtor   SATA      0  x  IDE  hdd

what version of Linux will install on  above system?
Linux 9.1 pe   gives message that kernal UNABLE to install on SATA hdd

please advise this hopefull beginner
