I tried and it didnt seem to work...trying to get rid of:

smpppd
pptp
wvdial
(to start with anyway)
I tried the packages above:

      <remove-packages config:type="list">
        <package>ppp</package>
        <package>smpppd</package>
        <package>pptp</package>
        <package>wvdial</package>
      </remove-packages>

that's working fine here
