[opensuse-artwork] Base colour and code-name of release
Hi! I don't know if this has already been discussed and therefore is redundant, and I apologise in advance if that is the case, but I wanted to suggest that we base the artwork (esp., the wallpaper) of the release on the colour referred to by the release code-name. For 12.1 the code-name is "Asparagus" referring to the colour #87A96B [1]. And that was just my random suggestion because I liked the celadon shade better than the bluish green that gnokii had started with - it's not a rule, and neither does Coolo choose the code names systematically - it just happened that it was the start of asparagus season here in Nuremberg when the 12.1 cycle started. I discussed green as colour with Nuno Pinheiro, one of the KDE/Oxygen designers, and he pointed out that green is a problematic colour for screen branding because out of RGB, green has the narrowest colour gamut and worst fidelity on most hardware. That means that any new green shade we choose will probably get shifted to something else on users' monitors (unless they have the same designer-quality IPS screen as the person who chose it), probably duller than the intended shade, and accounts for the complaints of 'swamp water' that we got with the 11.2 KDE background: http://www.heise.de/imgs/18/4/2/3/7/4/6/opensuse.png-e9e30e93dbaaf58d.jpg Anyone else want to be brave and do something different this time round? 12 is a new major number for us. What about something like a deep, rich plum, accented with green http://www.colourlovers.com/palette/111832/A_Nostalgic_Drunk or if you want to be brave, maybe something headache-inducing :)) http://www.colourlovers.com/palette/53440/a_s_p_i_r_i_n or maybe not :) Colourlovers.com is a great place to play with palettes. What sort of atmosphere do people want? Fresh, clean and light seems to be very 'in'. Almost like 60s/70s but without the brown. -- IRC: helen_au helen.south@opensuse.org helensouth.com -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+help@opensuse.org

That's actually cool stuff Jos. I like the warm colors that appear in the palettes as well as some of the images. One thing to be careful with is how to implement some of these ideas. If you notice, most of the images have a combination of circles and letters and while the match very well, they could end up becoming busy on the eyes. If we go for one color palette from the one you showed, I wold go for the colors that have pastel shades on it. The others are probably too much for the eyes. Pastel shades are easier on the eyes. I liked this one a lot: http://www.colourlovers.com/palette/1447198/the_sixties -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+help@opensuse.org
The color palettes you chose Helen are pretty interesting. I like them. I would also love to see them side by side with greens and other accent colors. However, I see that the purple ones are very Ubuntu-like, still we could use them along with good greens and grays. But we will probably still need to settle on one palette and design accordingly. Hi Helen, I will keep my design black, gray, silver, dark green techi industrial ... I so hate brown things, and now Dell send me a laptop bronze colored :-( But Will, mark a point, we really need something that can make a difference, and create a real new trend in how people will perceive our new major numbering. I've a off-topic question, but are really palettes used anymore ? I've heard that a very old fashion to do things ? (don't see any offense, I'm just curious, and really didn't know design, apart the fact to say I love. I hate :-) ) -- Bruno Friedmann Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch openSUSE Member & Ambassador GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 irc: tigerfoot -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+help@opensuse.org

Brown can seem a little daunting at times. It is a color that can quickly go from being very light and pleasurable to something that sparks images of disaster, mud, and overall unwelcoming. Balanced properly with greens, it sparks a very natural feeling. As if you were standing on a hill and trees are around you. So it really depends on how you mix them. I proposed a color palette that includes a shade of brown. Look up "Xplana Bright" on kuler.adobe.com and you will see what I am talking about.
But Will, mark a point, we really need something that can make a difference, and create a real new trend in how people will perceive our new major numbering.
Agreed!

Palettes are always welcome as long as we know how to use them. Generally they are color guidelines rather than set color that will be used in icons or whatever. They serve the purpose of designer to keep their creations withing a color restriction and overall theme. However, sometimes having a palette does little. For example with the Oxygen Icon theme. Although this icon theme is very beautiful it has a strong deviance from it's color palette. Not only that, but since so many artists contributed to the icon set, the interpretation of the color palette that they gave and placed into their icons was somewhat lost. However, Oxygen is still a very complete icon theme, very detailed and with a strong backup.

I have always wanted to do something different for openSUSE. It is about time. Although, we would like to send a good message and not be so different that we will seem unreliable. My blog is all about changing, tweaking openSUSE. Take a look sometime.

That would be fancy.
