Well, it was a "gut" response.

At openSUSE I'm mostly interested in learning how to become more proficient in a variety of areas.

1. I know nothing of how to use open build, how to chase down a bug list to learn how to work on one, but I'm open to someone showing me how. 2. I want to clean up the wiki since it seems to be neglected over the last couple of years and make it easier to navigate and understand. 3. Artwork I do for fun and contribute what I do when it suits me, but I have no motive involved with my submissions. I'm open for designing things for people if they ask me to or collaborate on items being worked on. 4. I also do what I can to market the openSUSE brand across the net in what channels I use or add things that I think are relevant such as to G+ or on occasion Twitter. Money is tight right now so I don't have the funds to really travel anywhere unfortunately until I find steady employment and finish school.

The easiest items for me to do right now are wiki and artwork until I learn how to work with other aspects of the project.

I live in California, just a "stone throw" away from Microsoft, Apple and Google. Just the fact that I choose Linux over MS or Apple sort of makes me a "black sheep" in my area, but I don't give in because I believe in following what I think is right and Linux and openSUSE are the right way to do things. Even my university builds their curriculum around MS products. Every class I take I am required to learn a new product developed by MS or Adobe for that matter. Neither of which am I a big supporter of, but the degree and core knowledge base from the coursework is more important than the software the instructors are required to have us use to complete our projects.

I started using Ubuntu in 2009 when MS announced they would no longer support XP which I was having constant trouble with viruses and malware anyway. It made no difference what I did to protect my system it was always corrupt and I finally gave up on their product. When Ubuntu switched to the Unity interface I was no longer happy with their product and began looking for an alternative that worked for me. I was interested in ChromeOS and stumbled upon a download called ChromeOS Linux which was based on openSUSE Studio someone had built. I loved the way it worked and how "natural" it was for me to navigate the system. From there I naturally migrated over to version 11.4 (I think it was) and began to learn as much as I can as often as possible. There is A LOT involved with openSUSE and since I'm not able to just sit all day and pick it apart I can only go piece by piece as I have time to. In short, I have only been using openSUSE since 2011 but the more I get involved the more I love it! I have also relieved myself of the problems I had while using MS which is a blessing to turn on my computer and just go rather than spend an hour trying to clean it of garbage before I can get anything done.

I was born in Oakland, California in 1970. I remember the days before Microsoft and Apple. I remember the Apple IIe, when MS came on (12) 3-1/2" floppies and most PC's were called IBM clones. I remember having to use the command line to navigate my files and my first home computer was a Commodore64 with a cassette drive to load programs before I could afford a 5-1/4" floppy external that weighed more than most CPU's these days. I remember the Tandy1000 and my father had Packard Bell when he worked for Pacific Telesis. I have been around computers all my life but never experienced "real" computing until I experienced Linux and the internet. These two inventions together have changed the world for the better in ways many people have no concept of and I want to learn all about it. Most average people know what Android is, but those same people don't have a clue of what Linux is, why? I want to see this change and I'm trying to do my part and what I can to make this change and raise awareness.

Long story short, I'm getting my degree in Software Engineering with hopes that I will find a company to work for that either shares my goal or at least understands it and won't try to turn me into another mindless Microsoft or Apple groupie. Until that happens and even after it does, I'm still a advocate and fan of SUSE and openSUSE and will continue to help as much as I can when I can. It's kind of like that first car or first girlfriend, you try like hell to keep them around as long as you can because you get an emotional attachment to your "first" like no other and openSUSE is in reality "my first".
