[opensuse-artwork] GSOC poster for conferences etc
Heya all, You might have read that GSOC 2012 is going to happen again: http://news.opensuse.org/2012/02/29/opensuse-gsoc-2012/ We need to tell students that they need to be HERE, with US! So we need a nice GSOC poster. Now google has made artwork for GSOC 2012: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0Z4BTG1iJDs/TyG9uyApFrI/AAAAAAAAAhY/raFJlaZqdes/s1... I slapped a geeko on it but that's of course not good enough :D So, who can design some poster which can be used at conferences and universities to get students into GSOC 2012? I was thinking about taking google's image on the bottom of a poster, adding the blue on top and having some text there, see my crazy drawing here: http://susepaste.org/13964893 Something like that... I've uploaded it to github just so you have something as a starter :D BTW we still need a text for on this poster, too: http://susepaste.org/71297168 ideas? Love, Jos

What about using the Geeko Wants You image that we've used in several places in the past? I'm not sure where the original artwork is, but Henne might know. With that, we may not even have to bother with much text. It is provocative enough to make people want to find out more about it. Combine the Geeko Wants You image with the GSoC image you pointed to in the background. Picture says a thousand words! :-) Bryen M Yunashko openSUSE Project -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

I would rather frame it as - the concept is good with using tags and brining the code effect. It's just the fonts and wording that need some fixes. should look more openSUSE I believe :)

I wouldn't be as harsh as mfoxx was :-) But I would say there are design issues here as the request is for a poster format. This layout is in landscape format and folks are going to be less likely to be able to put up a poster somewhere that takes up so much space from left to right. It should be in portrait format. which is what most posters are typically hung up as. The Google's poster is based in summer and "party" a good way to work and learn, more than a "professional summer" typing code, so I made something that looks like casual (I don know if it's the right word)

Ugly argument ;-) We are the distro with the slogan "have a lot of fun!" so something funny and happy in my opinion is more than fine. Let SLE be all boring and professional, openSUSE is about fun. I'm otherwise not a huge fan of the design myself, it doesn't fit with the GSOC 2012 artwork and has all these fonts on it. I would have the 'summer of code' part from the flags, maybe. And we do need some other text, maybe just "Join us!". I do like the suggestion of the big "we need you" geeko, too, people love the geeko... Sizes would have to be A3 and such, btw.

Less text, less colours, without Google Logo, and more big 600x900. That Is a lot better, well done :), my only gripe is the proportions of the poster elements are slightly out of whack just make the title text slightly bigger to match the proportions of the other elements.
also some more info is needed as it is isn't all that explanatory, and perhaps the google logo at the bottom with a "sponsored by" or somthing added note, I am not with openSUSE at all, I am just an artist who uses openSUSE and is on this list, nothing more -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

Do you have svg file of that poster? It would be easier to discuss ideas by creating example. Without svg: Try to align horizontal text to the left. Try to keep size and orientation of items with similar importance the same (as Michael said). In particular, items in a puzzle pieces should be just as easy to read as any other, so not in all directions, even when not horizontal. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

What do you think about left alignment with root prompt as a first character in the line: # # Google << Google logo # Summer_Of_Code_2012 # with <graphics:sun and opensuse logo> # # {code, experience, fun,$$$} << [1] # # Geeko needs you !!!! << [2] # # # http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:GSOC << this is short enough # Also, I would not put $$$ or money, as that should not be a primary motive for participation, but nice side effect. It is more for initiated that know what is little green creature with swirly tail. For non-initiated it reads "Google Summer of Code NEEDS YOU" which is not wrong in general, but reader will miss who is the caller in this particular case - openSUSE. Also, muted background that doesn't compete for readers attention with text, would be the right thing. URL is better with http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:GSOC . Although "opensuse.org/openSUSE:GSOC" will work when entered in a browser, it is better to give a hint with http:// that text is not another reference on opensuse.org and openSUSE:GSOC connected with slash, but real URL where interested can find more info. In general, if ideas would be in some format that knows about layers, which png doesn't, it would be possible to give "visual comment", in other words make changes and present for comment. /me is dreaming about etherpad for images. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

Size is good, but DPI is 72, needs to be 300 DPI. 72 DPI will always suck for serious paper printing.

But until time comes that we can create image with some etherpad for images here is how I would like to see that poster: http://susepaste.org/07cdec03 It is 300x300 ppi, but as I did not change number of pixels, real size is 7.2x7.2 inches, otherwise file size will be in Mbytes. What I did: Removed "~>" ahead of "Geeko needs you!" that just steals focus from message. Removed "+Info:" ahead of URL, for the same reason. Shuffled a bit logos. Added "GSOC is sponsored by:" above Google, as there are 2 objects on the poster, GSOC and openSUSE. For insiders it is clear that GSOC is sponsored by Google, not openSUSE, but poster is for everybody, so making clear the fact is better then to fight rumors based on confusion. Also, there is option to add grayed out small print below, as letter format is not square as this graphics and there will be plenty of room. It should be a digest of openSUSE participation in GSOC, for those that don't have handy smartphone to check URL, but that part is for Bryen. Thats good. As it makes it distinguished. Just one thing here, The "o" in GSoC is not capitalized. I dont have the exact URL to point, but this is what is handy to me right http://google-melange.appspot.com/document/show/gsoc_program/google/gsoc2010... :) . Also the same is mentioned on the wikipedia page.

Also, I would say it would be a good idea to be a little more descriptive on the date. As it clearly doe not tell what exactly are dates for, for instance "Coding begins" or "Student application submission" and so on. Also is it possible to have the geeko head the same as the text color ? I think it will be good since there will be a good consistency there :). Or if thats done on purpose its cool. /S -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

That is not a problem, just put that logo with sufficient room above and below. It is important to have it. I agree that the URL needs to be much more prominent. Remember, this poster will be put up in schools where many students may not even ever heard of openSUSE before. They won't know who Geeko is and if they have to squint at the bottom to see the small URL, then we lose them as potential candidates. We have about three seconds as student walks by before we capture their eyes. The most critical 3 seconds in our lives. :-) I think the poster overall looks great, with just as Rajko suggested... more visible URL. In the US, we have a few FOSS events at universities coming up soon. So we plan to print them up this weekend. Can we get the following two sizes? 1: 8 1/2 x 11 inches (300 dpi) To print out on regular letter-size paper. 2. 24x24 inches (100 dpi) To print out on a small vinyl banner. Many thanks! Heya all,
You might have read that GSOC 2012 is going to happen again: http://news.opensuse.org/2012/02/29/opensuse-gsoc-2012/
We need to tell students that they need to be HERE, with US! So we need a nice GSOC poster. Now google has made artwork for GSOC 2012: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0Z4BTG1iJDs/TyG9uyApFrI/AAAAAAAAAhY/raFJlaZqdes/ s1600/GSOC+12+logo.png
I slapped a geeko on it but that's of course not good enough :D
So, who can design some poster which can be used at conferences and universities to get students into GSOC 2012?
I was thinking about taking google's image on the bottom of a poster, adding the blue on top and having some text there, see my crazy drawing here: http://susepaste.org/13964893
Something like that... I've uploaded it to github just so you have something as a starter :D
BTW we still need a text for on this poster, too: http://susepaste.org/71297168
ideas?
Love, Jos
Thanks everyone for the awesome creativity in this thread. Really, really REALLY cool! The many itterations led to a pretty cool thing imho - the poster Andi blogged about I think is pretty much ready for print. The text is a bit IN- YOUR-FACE, I wonder if the colors of the background could be used for the fonts instead to make them look less out of place? But in any case, the background should be turned into a GSOC t-shirt or so :D Oh and Andi, talkin' about you - keep working on that icon for one-click- install. Awesome. Now a small one :D Victor, I love the monitor idea. I think it's not so fitting to GSOC but I do think we should keep that for something in the future. If you want I can upload the SVG to our github repo - but you could do it yourself too, I'd be happy to give you access rights :D Now after all the huggy things, a request - oSC 2012 needs art. I would suggest that a quick google image search on prague might give some inspiration?!? /Jos

Hi ! Thank's Jos for all. In Github's page in repo artwork, I have read-only access. Later I will try to upload my svg file. It's my first time, so I will try to do it well... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org
