[opensuse-artwork] Pixel Pool Theme Discussion: GreyGreen
Alright, so this was something I'd been meaning to do, but I was under some heavy work load from my non-openSUSE life ;-). I wanted to start discussions on the openSUSE Art mailing list for all of the proposed themes that are on the Pixel Pool page (en.opensuse.org/ Artwork/Pixel_Pool). I also want to take this opportunity to encourage anyone here who has any theme ideas for openSUSE 11.0 to check that page out, and give your idea. Mockups, scanned in paper sketches, even plaintext that gives your idea well will work. 11.0 is coming fast, so start working on your idea! So, our first (and currently only) theme doesn't actually have a contributor name attached, but I believe it's an internal SUSE/Novell guy ;-). It's called GreyGreen, and is available here: [http:// en.opensuse.org/Artwork:Pixel_Pool/11.0/GreyGreen] -- Kevin "Yo" Dupuy | Public Mail: <kevin@kevinsword.com> Hope for America: Ron Paul for President <RonPaul2008.com> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+help@opensuse.org

So let me throw my opinion out there: I really like it! I am a big fan of the darker graphics, but of course this is openSUSE so there has to be green. I think this proposed theme really works well. I especially like the installer look. I'd have to say, I like the 10.3 graphics, but these are really nice and look extremely professional! That's not to say I don;t have any ideas for improvements. For one, the grey area of the installer has a wavy background to it, and I think that would be a good idea to put though all of the grey areas, especially the one on the login screen. Other than that, an excellent theme and I'd like to see what others have to say. -- Kevin "Yo" Dupuy | Public Mail: <kevin@kevinsword.com> Hope for America: Ron Paul for President <RonPaul2008.com> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+help@opensuse.org

Hej! The mockups are "made by jimmac" (check out page history). In general I like them. Specially the grey-areas are cool! But I would replace the deep green in the background with the bamboo-green from the "Abord" button (installer). IMHO it would make it more friendly. The bamboo-green is like young grass in the spring. The deep-green is like old strong grass at a ending summer afternoon. I prefer the spring feeling :-) And I thing the dark green make it to "geeky". btw the grey "Help" button grey great! Maybe the rounded corners could be a bit less rounded(?). Shall we post the YaST theme layouts stuff to http://en.opensuse.org/Artwork:Pixel_Pool/11.0/ too? Last time I posted my mockup just to http://en.opensuse.org/Pimp_My_Installer . This looks really nice. Professional. Just a few bits and bytes.... The light on the setup-boot looks a bit out of place (style) to me. Don't know how to replace though.... Maybe the login-screen is a little bit 'dark'. It does not look so fresh compared to the other screens. Maybe we can use the boot-screen and dupli it for the login? In that case the grey area won't switch to another size and the text will just pop-up under it when booting is done...... Also buttons could be a little bit smaller to make ik look less candy. But overall: Soooooooooooooooooo nice :D Grz, Bart -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+help@opensuse.org

I think the bootscreen is absolutely brilliant (except the light-effect on the welcome writings). I think it would look greet to re-use the black bar (with openSUSE written on it) for most other screens, too. Maybe vertically centered. This would make a good-looking login screen. The graphics look really nice, but they go a certain 'kde way'... of course they are meant perfectly to fit the KDE installation. BUT: we also ship gnome, xfce,<other DE> on the disks and they should not look completely out of place once the installation is completed. Maybe having a KDE theme, a gnome theme, and depending on what default DE is selected applying? The bad thing is: this would double the effort for having good themes that always fit. Could you specify whey they look KDE-ish? Too me the setupboot looks Gnome-ish but not in a way that does not fit with KDE or XFCE. Maybe it's just the way I just associated the gray / dark system...the point is that in the gnome view, you have nowhere any black on the screen... so it looks a bit misplaced. whereas in kde, you still have the dark on the screen afterwards (the dash bar or however it may be called now ;) Dominique -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+help@opensuse.org

So we customise the taskbar of Gnome and XFCE to black and we're done ;-). it's the only black on the screen for KDE (as long as we don't place Widgets on the desktop...however...could be nice) Bart -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+help@opensuse.org

I am also coming up with some more mockups based on the gray one. Maybe we can get more ideas out of more examples. Not only will I make one for the boot and installation process but also some on the desktop. I am also wondering how customized do you want suse 11.0 to be. Because I was thinking that a good way to brand it even better is by havig a style of it's own. And I don't mean just the green wallpaper and the gekko somewhere on the desktop but I suggest that we take BESPIN style for kde4 and make it better, so that it can be used as default on suse 11. I do know that this particular style has been abandoned for kde4, but I see a lot of potential in it; whereas the oxygen theme, although really good, it is still being worked on and it could see further changes. BESPIN seems to be configurable enough or as slick in its current state. I agree with you. I would like to customize theme so when people look at openSUSE and go... "that's unique" (in a good way). I like the idea of making a darker color GNOME panel. I'm away from Internet connectivity right now, so I don't know when this will be up (by Sunday afternoon US time I think) but I have a new mockup for the login screen. It will be up at the GreyGreen P.P. page soon. It follows the GreyGreen theme but adds a "face browser" with an openSUSE logo and the time. If you're wondering about the names, I was watching CNN at the time and needed names ;-). Also, the openSUSE logo looks a little differant. Instead of using a dark shadow, I used a light background to make the logo kind of "pop- out" at the user. I think it looks cool, wondering what yall think. -- Kevin "Yo" Dupuy | Public Mail: <kevin@kevinsword.com> Hope for America: Ron Paul for President <RonPaul2008.com> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+help@opensuse.org
