[opensuse-artwork] My proposal for 13.1
Now seems to be the time that people are throwing ideas at the wall, seeing what will stick. My proposal is that we stick with what's already stuck. Despite the rough start, we've gotten *huge praise* for the artwork in 12.3, SO LETS FINISH IT: 1. Keep the core wallpaper design of 12.3. 2. Improve desktop integrations: 1. GNOME: flush out the time-sensitive wallpaper stack 2. KDE: Find/build a beautiful, functional KDM theme (or not...see 3). 3. E17: Wallpaper integration. 3. Unify our desktop experience: 1. Pick a unified desktop manager to use for *all the desktops*: SLiM, CDDM, LightDM, Entrance, etc... or GDM/KDM. Just one, though, that we can theme consistently. 2. Pick/build a unified icon theme to use for *all the desktops*: I don't care if its built on oxygen or gnome-icons, or back to Tango... but it ought to be beautiful, and at least somewhat *green*. 4. Improve supporting materials: since we won't be building everything from scratch we can focus a bit more on banners for social media, printables such as posters or banners in a variety of common sizes (and languages), etc. 5. Improve community engagement: Actually run, then collect and package, a selection of backgrounds from the community as supplemental artwork. That's all I've got. Just to iterate: I'm much rather see us put our efforts into refining a success than tossing it and starting over, just because that's what we usually do. -- James Mason SUSE Studio Developer openSUSE Member SUSE jmason@suse.com (P) +1 360 752 6707 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

seems reasonable. May I add a line: ask for *negative* comments. What is not that good in present artwork and should be changed. For example, I have a mixed feeling with the fact that we have green everywhere (ie: green selection color in thunderbird). I like green, but may be not everywhere thanks jdd -- http://www.dodin.org http://jddtube.dodin.org/20120616-52-highway_v1115 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

My proposal is that we stick with what's already stuck. Despite the rough start, we've gotten *huge praise* for the artwork in 12.3, SO LETS FINISH IT:
1. Keep the core wallpaper design of 12.3.
I can buy into that
2. Improve desktop integrations: 1. GNOME: flush out the time-sensitive wallpaper stack
Any ideas? I really drew a blank when I tried to come up with what differences we'd use for the time-sensitive wallpaper?
2. KDE: Find/build a beautiful, functional KDM theme (or not...see 3).
I agree, any ideas?
3. E17: Wallpaper integration.
Do we know who did the E17 branding? That entire stack is some separately from the current branding-openSUSE package, would be nice to bring it in the fold.
3. Unify our desktop experience: 1. Pick a unified desktop manager to use for *all the desktops*: SLiM, CDDM, LightDM, Entrance, etc... or GDM/KDM. Just one, though, that we can theme consistently. 2. I'm less sure about this one - while I see where you're coming from, with my GNOME team hat on I'm strongly of the opinion that the best DM for GNOME is GDM - it is after all, identical to the rest of the Gnome shell experience. That said, I understand that KDM has been a painpoint for some time, and I don't think the other desktop managers do much better - so I'd suggest instead we pick a preferred desktop manager and theme it 'as default'.. even if the odd desktop like GNOME sticks with its 'native' one because it's the best fit for that particular desktop (and in the case of GDM, the theme is trivial and unchanged for the last few releases)
4. Improve supporting materials: since we won't be building everything from scratch we can focus a bit more on banners for social media, printables such as posters or banners in a variety of common sizes (and languages), etc.
Sounds like a good idea
5. Improve community engagement: Actually run, then collect and package, a selection of backgrounds from the community as supplemental artwork.
We're already on it - as long as the submissions are legal and in our four aspect ratios, I intend to have them packaged
That's all I've got. Just to iterate: I'm much rather see us put our efforts into refining a success than tossing it and starting over, just because that's what we usually do.

This could be harder to do but more consistent. There are icon themes that can go well with this, for example, faenza, tango, nuvola, elementary, etc. Although, it is also a good idea to select one that can have more support for while in gnome one icon theme can cover all aspects of the interface, it could fall short on KDE and some icons could be missing. I have been looking for a good icon theme replacement, in case oxygen does not fit well as a standard across desktops.
4. Improve supporting materials: since we won't be building everything from scratch we can focus a bit more on banners for social media, printables such as posters or banners in a variety of common sizes (and languages), etc.
This is more a matter of marketing. Generally, release artwork managed by this team involves creating online marketing and not printed materials, other than the dvd jacket and occasionally the openSUSE Box. This also involves setting aside money that can supply printing materials. If the proposal is to produce more printed materials, let's explore that along with our marketing team. That way we can create specific marketing materials.
5. Improve community engagement: Actually run, then collect and package, a selection of backgrounds from the community as supplemental artwork.
This is already being done. There have been a few submissions already and Ilmehtar (Richard) has agreed to set time and package a supplemental set of wallpapers for 13.1. Stay tuned! :D
That's all I've got. Just to iterate: I'm much rather see us put our efforts into refining a success than tossing it and starting over, just because that's what we usually do.
