[opensuse-artwork] openSUSE Stickers
Folks, Currently, we distribute two kinds of stickers at booth events. One is the big black circle sticker and the other is a system label sticker. These stickers don't really move much. At some point, we'll run out of the stock and will need to order new ones. Don't know exactly Jos's plans on this, but we should go ahead and start thinking of designs. Some observations: 1. The stickers are very openSUSE-centric. Meaning if you're already a fan of openSUSE, you'll want the stickers. But if you're not, you are unlikely to take a sticker. We rely on these stickers to help promote openSUSE on the street. So, I think these stickers should be created in a way that is attractive that makes someone say "Oh this sticker is so cool I want it on my laptop even if I don't use openSUSE yet." 2. This past weekend, several people asked me if I had stickers that had KDE or GNOME on it. So, maybe we should create stickers with both KDE + openSUSE logos and/or GNOME + openSUSE logos. With some line like "KDE: Powered on openSUSE!" Let's see some creative designs. Think outside the box. If we come up with something really cool, we can convince Jos to get them printed up. my daugther use like this one sticker that was included in one of the boxes, from memory it showed a pretty little lizard. SuSE (at the moment) was only written below, not prominent

I'd like to see us do something in cut vinyl, instead of a print. They're more durable, and can better complement someone's equipment. That would be cool. I'd also love to see die-cut Geeko stickers. (Sticker shaped exactly as the geeko) but custom die-cut stickers can get pricey to order. Maybe not so bad when we buy in bulk though. A simple Geeko shape (head or body) can be a picture worth 1,000 words, enough to make someone approach you and say "What's that?" thus starting a conversation. Right. Something that makes people want to grab the stickers even if they don't use openSUSE. Cool, awesome, unique. Also, in the samples above, one line says "designed for." I would be very careful using that phrase. "Powered by" is okay and safe, but designed for is misleading as it says that KDE is designed for openSUSE, and its not. The combined logos, if we do that, should represent a collaboration or a partnership or a co-existence. 1. Mouse pads are way more money 2. Who uses mouse pads anymore? With optical mice, pads are just for decoration. They serve no functional purpose anymore now that we don't use roller balls on mice. 3. Mouse pads are bulkier to carry to events than stickers and that's not going to make those of us who shlep stuff around to conferences near and far quite unhappy. Way easier to pack two rolls of stickers in our kit than to carry an extra box of mousepads. 4. The stickers are distributed for advertising value. A mouse pad is something you only see when people come to your computer, whereas a sticker is something people see on your laptop no matter where you are, whether in your office, at the local Starbucks, etc. 5. Laptop stickers are something lots of people collect in FOSSland. It's not unusual to see laptops plastered with lots of stickers. Mine is (although very tastefully done of course, hehe.) So the aim here is to create a sticker that people *want* to collect. Currently, our stickers don't move much. We often leave FOSS events with plenty of stickers left over to carry on to the next event and the event after that. So, if we're going to spend money on stickers for the purpose of advertising, then we need to make people desire the stickers. Otherwise, any expenditure on stickers in its current state is really a waste of money. If singular color is meant to save money, I don't think we have to worry too much about that. The cost difference isn't that significant especially as we'd be buying in huge bulk, and sticker printing isn't generally a per-color charge. But we should be careful to pick an overall color that doesn't get lost in the laptop color. As many laptops are black, a black sticker wouldn't be good to distribute. :-) But, while I don't have a specific image in mind, I'm thinking along the lines of bold. Something that catches someone's eye from across the room and they can't resist walking up to see this sticker up close. Ok some of those examples are scary. :-) But it is exactly the kind of "out-of-the-box" thinking I'd love to see come out of this thread. Let's put this in a different context. I'm not an artist, but most of you are. The idea behind this sticker gives you a chance to express yourself artistically beyond the standard "branding" thinking we've been doing all along. You all have skills and design ideas that existed long before you got involved in openSUSE. Now's your chance to go crazy and show your true artistry. We literally have too many Geeko things now. Plushie, stickers, etc. etc. etc. Forget the rules and just go for it. :-) Bryen -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-artwork+owner@opensuse.org

Green geeko head die cut vinyl with no words would be wonderful IMHO.
I think a sticker should strive for simplicity, the less the better.
And the strips of 'system labeling' are really good though, lots of
friends have peeled their windows ones and substituted them by the
openSUSE ones.

Whoah, that is indeed good. Markus, any chance you could make a few in SVG (incl GNOME and XFCE and one without logo's), put them in the repository on github and ping me? I'll then see what we can do about creating those :D Meanwhile I still look forward to ideas based on the suggestions by Bryen and Henne :D
