That's a shame. If I had to blindly guess I'd say power isn't enough to turn on your USB drive and the logic to abort it isn't working properly.
I think the best option at this point would be to report this directly to the U-Boot mailing list, so that upstream can resolve the problem.
The USB drive has its own power. So this should not be the problem.
