I forgot to update the uboot-setup.tgz (kiwi-hooks/setupUboot.sh). Details here:

Basically, the latest image (home:babelworx:branches...) can now survive a reboot, but dies on an illegal instruction. Which for me means that the new initrd that is written after yast2-firstboot is somehow kaputt. Fixed with https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/143674
For me, it now boots properly. Now testing the system itself... Ciaran
