For PGI compilers, there's a set of manuals in PDF. AFAICS, after you download the evaluation product and install that, you just pay PGI and they give you the license code. You don't get a CD or printed manuals. The simplest optimization flag is to use `-fast'. There are other flags for finer control, but -fast seems to work fine. There's a pgdbg debugger, which I have not tried. The `Workstation' bundle actually has pgf77, pgf90 and pghpf for F77, F90, and `high-performance' Fortran. Not sure how pghpf differs from the other two, but the PGI web site should have some info. Andy

I'd say that e.g. a bundled powerfull debugger and comprehensive manuals make a compiler more 'user-friendly' than one without. Also, if the code is optimized well with the standard settings, I'd call this user friendly.
