Re: [suse-amd64] Acer Aspire 1523 WLMI und 64bit-Linux Suse-9.2
Hello Matt, hello all Just for saying that my laptop is an Asus (L5D series), with SuSE 9.0 AMD64 and SuSE 9.1 AMD64 with an upgraded kernel (2.6.8) coming from SuSE 9.2. Under SuSE 9.0 (kernel 2.4.21-260) : with the right memory range + ports, my network card NetGear FA411 (16 bits) works. But this is not the case of my two modem cards (Hayes Optima 288 and Com'One 56K). See all the details in my previous mails sent to this mailing-list. Under SuSE 9.1 : modem cards well detected but wrong assigned device : /dev/cuax, instead of /dev/ttySx About FA411 : well detected, seen with ifconfig (eth1) but I think it can't be used. Regards Pascal

Hello Andreas,
is it possible for you to test the PCMCIA-Slots ?
I like to support this, please Andreas, test it with all PCMCIA cards you can get.
I do not have an Acer, but a HP zv5188EA, which is also a great and very fast notebook.
I initially had no problems with PCMCIA, *after* modifying the memory range and port configuration to include the memory and ports used by the system, and *after* using a kernel >= 2.6.7 (this was with 9.1 already).
The Axen / Sagem gprs pcmcia card works fine. However, as you can see in the many posts here from Pascal (using an Acer) he could not get his PCMCIA modems to work, despite adjusting the memory range and port configuration.
After seeing that I tried other PCMCIA cards, and they did not work.
- a Sierra wireless aircard (GPRS) does not get recognized, cs_serial does not get started (despite correct configuration) This is similar as to what Pascal sees with his modem cards.
- a modem card "Micronet Fax/Modem 56k" does freeze the system as soon as it is inserted. Once it is pulled out again, the system continues to work fine though (????).
Both PCMCIA cards work fine in a (32bit) Fujitsu Lifebook.
Based on this experience, and on Pascal's report, I think it is justified that someone with more knowledge and resources, such as you ;-) , does some tests, and tells us what works and what not, or gives us some troubleshooting tips.
I like to use a PCMCIA-card for WLAN. I have two cards for WLAN, Artem Comcard-11 and Netgear WG511T. Both are working with 32bit SUSE-9.2 in my 11Mbit/s-WLAN and WEB128. The Artem Comcard-11 uses an orinoco chipset and the Netgear WG511T uses an atheros chipset.
Does the PCMCIA-Slot work with the SUSE-9.2-64bit-LiveCD ?
If 9.2 needs the same adjustment of the PCMCIA memory range and port configuration, as 9.1 did, then it will not work with most, if not all cards.
The PCMCIA memory range and port configuration in SuSE 9.1 for amd64 did not reflect the different memory range and ports used in the 64 bit environment (HP, Compaq, Acer notebooks at least).
I do not know if SuSE 9.2 for amd64 did correct that. I did just an upgrade, not a new install, so it did use my old, already modified, configuration.
Thanks, Matt
How about Firewire and USB2 ? Any test results ?
The AcerAspire1523WLMi has a 100GB harddisk, 1GB RAM, 1 DVD burner, Nvidia-graphic-chip, 4 * USB2 , 1 mini-Firewire-Port and 2 PCMCIA-Slots. The AMD64-3200+ is NOT a mobile version. ( 1399,-? )
Best regards Wigbert
Hello again,
is somebody using an Acer Aspire 1523 WLMi with Suse-9.2 or another 64bit-Linux ?
I'm using an Aspire 1520.
Is there any problem with compatibility for 64bit ?
Depends on the WLAN card.
Does Linux support the PCMCIA-Slot ?
Should - but I haven't tested it.
