Bouncing to this list too since it might be an amd64 thing.. Error: ntpd[527]: cap_set_proc() failed to drop root privileges: Operation not permitted This is on amd64 hosts, google search didn't dig up much.. few mentions of another package, and one ntpd with this, but I didn't see a resolution. Have 30 blades like this.. same hw in a workstation works, though I YOU'd it the other day so it's more up to date then blades... but I YOU'd one of the blades and it's still failing there. ntpd definitely works on x86-64, all the suse x86-64 sles9s are running it.

Yeah.. runs at home on my test gentoo box.

Don't think so. We still use NIS for some stuff, but ntp is local in the passwd file anyway. Same error whether run as root or ntp: 1098 capget(0x19980330, 0, {, , }) = -1 EINVAL (Invalid argument) 1098 capset(0x19980330, 0, {CAP_SYS_TIME, CAP_SYS_TIME, CAP_SYS_TIME}) = -1 EPERM (Operation not permitted)1098 time([1096573769]) = 1096573769 1098 rt_sigaction(SIGPIPE, {0x2a9597ccb0, [], 0x4000000}, {SIG_IGN}, 8) = 0 1098 sendto(3, "<27>Sep 30 12:49:29 ntpd[1098]: "..., 102, 0, NULL, 0) = 102 1098 rt_sigaction(SIGPIPE, {SIG_IGN}, NULL, 8) = 0 1098 exit_group(-1) = ? Never seen capget/capset before myself.
