Hi Dima, you should boot with the DVD, start installation, stop it after choosing the language. Then "boot the installed system" and have the latest SMP !!! kernel from SuSE updates at hand. Do a rpm -hiv <new kernel> in root, and then you should be able to boot again. I had had the same problem with a 2x2 Opteron xw9300. Hope this helps take care Dieter

Hi, all.
I have been trying to install SuSe 9.3 on on an HP xw9300 workstation. The system installs fine, but then it will not boot. When I try to boot in the safe mode I get a kernel panic. The system is a dual Opteron 248, 4GB of RAM, and 2 SATA hard disks. I tried disabling acpi, but that didn't help.
A very similar problem was discussed on this list back in september 2005. Has that been resolved by any chance?

Hi Dieter, I am a little confused. The thing is, I have tried several distributions already. I have had the most success with WhiteBox linux, which is installed on the machine right now. The problem is it only works in single cpu mode, and refuses to boot the SMP kernel. So first, I would have to reinstall SuSe. Then I boot it with a DVD, start the installation again and stop it after selecting the language? Is that what you mean? Also, did you have any problems with getting the X-windows to work?
