The 2.6 kernel used is from kernel.org and was patched with the x86-64-specific patch. I have another system running SLES 2.6.0-test4 updated modutils using module-init-tools-0.9.14-pre2.

The modutils update package from people/kraxel contains both old and new module tools and should work as-is with 2.4 and 2.6 kernels. No need to install module-init-tools manually.

No. I'm also running vanilla kernel.org kernels using suse modutils rpms.
