Compatable hardware for SuSE 9.0 AMD64 version
Hello, I looked in this groups archives, and did not find much discussions yet about the athlon64 and athlon64 FX51, so I hope I'm not off topic here. I have SuSE 9.0 Professional AMD64 version, and looking wich hardware will work the best with this software. (I try to avoid "difficult components" when I still can) I checked the SuSE hardware compatability list, but this list is completely empty as far as "SuSE 9.0 Professional AMD64" compatability is concerned. I asked the SuSE helpdesk, but there answer is: "Our research and development department has some Opteron (pre-production series directly from AMD) systems and I don't expect that we will buy new hardware anywere soon. So I could only point you to the experience of other users" Are there some of you out there, running this stable? What hardware do you use? I was looking at: - For the Athlon64, Motherboard: Asus K8V or MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R. - For the Athlon64 FX51, Motherboard: Asus SK8V or MSI K8T Master2 FAR. All boards have the VIA K8T800 Chipset and VIA VT8237 Southbridge. (Don't need any features on the motherboard, the less, the better --which is difficult to get) Does anybody know if this AMD64 version is picky about memory modules? - Harddisk controller: Don't think the S-ATA controllers on these boards are supported; will the P-ATA controler work? Maybe an addional affordable SCSI controller? - Graphics card: nVIDIA Geforce FX 5900 (from ASUS) Anybody experience with any of this? I would greatly appreciate all sugestions. If I'm in the wrong list, please let me know. Emile

Unfortunatly yes.
I asked the SuSE helpdesk, but there answer is:

The Via chipset should work, but I don't have tested any of those boards above. Note that Serial ATA will not work!

As long as they work ;-)
- Harddisk controller: Don't think the S-ATA controllers on these boards are supported; will the P-ATA controler work? Maybe an addional affordable SCSI controller?
P-ATA works fine, for S-ATA there's no working driver right now. SCSI drivers do work, e.g. we've tested most (all?) of the Adaptec ones.
- Graphics card: nVIDIA Geforce FX 5900 (from ASUS)
Should work with 2D out of the box for 3d you need the binary only driver from nvidia.
Anybody experience with any of this? I would greatly appreciate all sugestions.
If I'm in the wrong list, please let me know.

I can say you have no probs with the AMD8131 chipset Motherboards. I've installed the SuSE 9.0 2 days ago on 'Tyan Tiger K8W (S2875) dual Opteron' with Adaptec SCSI, Plextor 708 DVD, NikkonScanner and so on. SuSE 9.0amd64 runs nearly alone in that machine :-( Greets to Andreas J. and other SuSE workers who worked on 9.0amd64.

I've just used NVidea5200 Gravic's on Asus and Abit Graphic C., that works fine but full supported with NVidea-Drivers. Look that Howto: "ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/supplementary/X/XFree86/ nvidia-gfx-AMD64-HOWTO" The TyanTiger is aviable with single or dual CPU-socket. Rev. 1.02 is out, with Chipset and Powerdiod-cooling such on TyanThunder K8W ( S2885) Powerconnector EPS or ATX possible. S-ATA and Raid function: S-ATA-HD's arrived tomorrow here than I can try. PS: afk SuSE and AMD worked together for the AMD8000 series chipset support for amd64 SLES and -9.0, so it's a good choise to take a board with them. Tyan, I-will and some MSI boards have them. I have used several Printers, CD-RW's,... and I think most hardware who runs on 9.0 32bit does it on 64bit, too. -- Ciao Marco, registered GNU/Linux-User#313353

SATA will likely not work at the moment. PATA should work on VIA.

When you use the nvidia binary driver you have to get the source based version and change the Makefile to pass -mno-red-zone to the compilation of the kernel module. With that change it works on 9.0 -Andi
