Yast will not install updated packages
I have this problem on both 9.1 and 9.2 64bit versions. As an example I went to install Firefox 1.0 64bit, Yast prompts me to put in the DVD, fine. It resorts to the 0.8 version on the DVD. I can only assume this is a hardware problem, so asking for suggestions as to a replacement motherboard for 940 pin Opteron and SuSE 9.2 that can handle PC-3200 DDR ECC Registered. These are the only new components in a system that did great with all SuSE up to 9.2. FAILURE OCCURS AT: "Searching for infofile" - occurs immediately after activating the usb and ieee1394. Goes into the manual install where it reports that the CD drive cannot be mounted, though it loads all modules (SCSI, CDROM, USB, etc. Two times, once each in 64 bit and then in 32-bit modes, I have gotten a successful installation until I did the YaST on-line update. On repeated attempts either the system would simply freeze, or it would re-boot at various places in the process. To isolate, I tested against email retrieve, and the same things occurred. I have swapped out NICs, used two tested Cat-5 cables, removed the SCSI and worked with a clean IDE disk, re-wired the case to hunt for any possibility of electrical contacts, removed the ieee1394, disabled the on-board NIC (which was not recognized), on-board sound, and on-board power management. I have tried installs at 62 and 32-bit with standard installation, ACPI disabled, and safe mode. I used the YaST memory test: system ran for a full day, no errors. I have reformatted all the SCSI disks. Lacking clue as to how to go forward, I am asking for suggestions for a new mobo. would like to have a working on-board NIC and sound, but not completely necessary. Or if anyone has any other ideas, would appreciate it. Any Socket 940 Mainboard can handle ECC PC3200. What PSU are you using and what is the 12V line's current rating in amps ? Thanks for responding so quickly, andy. PSU is a PC Power and Cooling 510 Deluxe. The AMI BIOS reports 11.308 volts. According to W/V = A, then 45.1 amps. That seems like a lot to me.. If you take the side of the chassis away - what is the rating for 12V amperage on the label - I would expect no less than 26A for this application. It gets over the "Searching for infofile" if you leave it long enough or if you pop a formatted floppy into the drive, this is something that appeared at 8.0 or 8.1 and still hangs around. I had the CD mount problem with my x86_64 laptop, I could go into VC 04 and manually mount it, but the problem persisted. I tried for about a couple of hours and suddenly it worked and I can't say I did anything to make it work.

Once I got 9.2 loaded, I have had no further problems of any kind. On the x86 box Asus A7N8X-E, I had to do a new install without reformatting the partitions to get it to work - same CD mounting problems and it refused to install on the 9.1 120G ATA100 drive, so I rsync'd everything over to a 160G ATA133 drive, then installed over that, no subsequent problems once it was up. On the P-II/333 laptop with 64M and 20G HD, a new install went flawlessly, no graphical install through lack of enough memory, but X came up and it's been fine - using Windowmaker rather than KDE, it's very responsive.

9.2 seems scizophrenic, Pete Nikolic tried installing on a new HD, it woouldn't have it, he partially installed XP, then 9.2 installed, wiped the HD and started 9.2 install, again it failed, partially installed XP and it went through, wiped the XP partition and it's been A1 ever since. I truly have no answers, it's been the only problematical install I've ever encountered including the first version Linus put up for ftp, SLS, MCC, Slackware, Caldera, RedHat, SuSE and gentoo, plus other non-Linux ones like Solaris SPARC/x86 and FreeBSD.
