[Announce] 9.2 AMD64 Install CD with New Kernel
I'm currently uploading to ftp.suse.com (will soon be also on its mirrors) at: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/aj/PatchCD The ISO is called: SuSE-9.2-PatchCD-1-RC3-CD1.iso If you have experienced installation problems with our 9.2 DVD, then download this CD and boot from it. It will ask you then for "CD1", and just insert the DVD at that point. During installation it will load packages from CD1 several times... This PatchCD has two advantages: * Installation with a new kernel. If you had problems installing with the DVD, please try it this way. * All the updated packages are installed directly. You can also download the CD and start "PatchCD" in YaST to only install the updated packages. Note the packages and the kernel are from before Christmas, so we have some more updates out since then... Yes, it solves the problem that we have on 64-bit systems with SATA hard disks. The installation kernel from the original DVD fails to detect SATA hard disks under some circumstances, but the patch CD does the job well. Are there any objections if I burn those CDs and send them to our customers that are experiencing problems? Or do they have to get their own image and burn it?

This is only half an adavantage. I tried the installation last week and if I select a bit of more software packages during installation, then I have to change between the patch CD and the DVD1 quite often. :-)

Either: * If you cannot install from the media: Burn the ISO on a CD and boot from this CD, it will then ask for the first CD - use the DVD in this case. * If you can install: Just put the CD into your CDROM and run "PatchCD" from YaST. I was not able to as well but if you disable USB and change a few memory settings in the BIOS you can then install. Try the DVD. If it does not work then get the CD. Am weary of fixing my mother-in-law's Windows machine. 1. is NLD 64-bit? not that she has a 64-bit computer, but would like to set up an emulator here. 2. Will NLD, on install, allow the Windows she has to stay on the drive, the way SuSE 9.2 does (with GRUB allowing dual boot), or does NLD simply replace the installed Microscheiss software? I would recommend looking at Libranet or Ubuntu. They both have 64-bit versions available. Libranet is especially easy to administer. You would need to download the Libranet 2.81 cd. If you have SATA they have a special iso to start the install. Both Libranet and Ubuntu are debian based, so upgrades and package installs are painless. Ubuntu will even mail you free cd's (32-bit version) if you go to their web site, or download and burn the 64-bit install or the 64-bit live cd. look at Libranet version 2.81 or Ubuntu 4.10. Newer versions of each are in beta. NLD is still a little too bleeding edge for Grandma. There's currently only a 32-bit NLD. What kind of emulator do you want?
