Chipset support of SuSE8.2-x86-64-Beta9
Hello together, I'am Newbie and very interesting of SuSE x86-64 and want built a PC with the AMD Opteron CPU. I've read there some Problems with the Asus-SK8N with Nvidia chipset. I've no problems to install SuSE8.x on x86-32bit or compile some apps. But compile a Kernel is to difficult for me in the moment. I don't need the Promise-SATA-Raid chip but need Adaptec2940-SCSI card for HD and CD-Rom, the Realtec-Lan and ALC-Soundchip. I want use xfree, KDE, Gimp, Ooffice and Sound with alsa. Have I a chance to get this "out of box" with the 8.2beta? Or is the Tyan-ThunderK8W (1 CPU fist and <4GBRam) with the AMD8131 chipset the bether choise, means bether support and easier to install? Maybe Andreas J. knows: Is there a Date when the SuSE8.3amd-x86 is ready to buy? Becomes the Price nearly how the SuSE8.x Pro (ca. 100$ or Eur)? -- Ciao Marco, registered GNU/Linux-User#313353

We're currently working to get teh Asus running. You can boot it with acpi=off and it works (but without the onboard network chip).

The rest should work fine.
Or is the Tyan-ThunderK8W (1 CPU fist and <4GBRam) with the AMD8131 chipset the bether choise, means bether support and easier to install?
The Tyan should work just fine.

October...
Price nearly how the SuSE8.x Pro (ca. 100$ or Eur)?

For the onboard network Nvidia should (or maybe they have already) released binary-only add on 64bit drivers. Nvidia doesn't release chipset documentation or free drivers, so we cannot directly support it. -Andi
Thanks Andreas, your answer helped me very much. Last Question is a working gravic-chip. 3D and or OpenGL must not work now and I'm stil happy with Nvidia GeForce460MX. Their drivers I get with YOU comes easy and works without problems. I hope there's not only serverowner reading here. Andreas Jaeger answers:

nvidia is supposed to have a patch for 64-bit Linux but it's not stable yet. But SuSE Linux comes with normal (non-3d drivers) for most (all?) nvidia cards - and also for others... Andreas

Hi, I think the problem is that - regardless of the GPU - on most AMD64 mainboards/chipsets, agpgart ain't working yet. I'm facing that very problem on my ASUS SK8N, 3D should be working (Radeon 7000 video card) but since I cannot get agpgart to load, no matter what kernel, whether 32-bit or 64-bit mode or what distribution I'm using - tried Debian, SuSE and RedHat and also several 2.4 and 2.6 kernels. Hence as long as agpgart ain't working on nForce3 (don't know about the VIA K8 chipsets), we won't have 3D-acceleration. Martin On Wed, 2003-09-10 at 12:15, Andreas Jaeger wrote:

The latest x86-64.org CVS kernel supports the Nforce3 AGP bridge, or your can use a newer rpm from ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/aj/Kernel-AMD64/ If AGP still doesn't work try booting with try_unsupported=1 on the kernel command line (not module command line). This should work on most K8 chipsets (except possible the Nforce3, but we fixed that) -Andi
Hi. I'm playing with the Beta9 again. hal1:/ # /usr/sbin/harden_suse /etc/rc.config doesn't exist! Is this really a SuSE Linux ? Any ideas? Sincerely, Thorsten Wolf

Broken package - just remove the test for /etc/rc.config... Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@suse.de, http://www.suse.de/~aj SuSE Linux AG, Deutschherrnstr. 15-19, 90429 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126
