RE: [suse-amd64] Suse 9.3 on HP xw9300 workstation: kernel panic!
Could you guys compare your BIOS versions? I've heard mixed reports about the HP xw9300 workstation and I'm curious if the BIOS may be involved. Ryan, does booting with pci=noacpi or acpi=off help? -Mark Langsdorf AMD, Inc.
I tried this...I deactivated dual core in the bios. Rebooted and choose normal startup and the again it locked up. Same spot as last time. No luck.

You can try to deactivate dual core in the BIOS. Then you should be able to finish installation and update to the newest SuSE kernel. After that you can reactivate dual core and everything should work fine.

I tried it with mem=1GB..again the result is the same. The kernel panic during failsafe boot shows the following:

BTW...the cpus are not 250s they're 272s (dual core).

Mine had 8GB. I don't suspect that 8 more would make a difference comapred to my machine, but you may want to try booting with 'mem=1GB' to see if it will at least boot. What are the details of the kernel panic?

Ken,
I tried as you suggested but the result is the same. Could the RAM be an issue? I know that some systems have issues with Large amounts of RAM. How much RAM did the xw9300 you worked on have?

My BIOS version is 786B9 v1.21. I did try it with acpi=off. Still same result. I haven't tried pci=noacpi. --ryan Langsdorf, Mark wrote:

We have the same BIOS version but an Nvidia FX540 graphics card. Furthermore, during installation the machine had just 8GB (8x1) memory. Later it was upgraded to 16GB. Markus Ryan Biltz wrote:
