Hello, we have some trouble with SuSE 8.2 Beta x86-64 Prof. Ed. on a TYAN Thunder K8S (S2880) BIOS 2.01 (newest): On installing there are two onboard Broadcom Gigabit NIS detected (BCM5704) but if the driver (bcm5700)is loaded :"cannot get MAC addr from NVRAM" is displayed and so eth0 and eth1 are FAILED. Also the DOS-Diskette-Tool 57udiag.exe from Broadcom give one error: "CPU-Test failed: register 5034 is 0xd", rest is PASSED. Perhaps a tool for 32bit non-Opteron systems?? Any clues? -- Mit freundlichsten Grüßen / With best regards ---- ________________________________________________________________ Mike D. Frenz (Dipl.-Phys.) Does the tg3 driver work? There're two different drivers for the cards...

A DOS disk should work with any Opteron system. So, if this does not work, it looks like some hardware problem to me, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@suse.de, http://www.suse.de/~aj SuSE Linux AG, Deutschherrnstr. 15-19, 90429 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

No, the same: after insmod bcm5700 or tg3: ...init_module: no such device

The driver from Broadcom was compiled to a single CPU Kernel and doesn´t work with a SMP-Kernel (Dual Opteron) Isn´t it possible to flash a new MAC into the NICs? Dan wrote:

They should have source somewhere (driver is GPLed). Just recompile it then.
Isn?t it possible to flash a new MAC into the NICs?
I don't know. On most chips the MAC can be changed/overwritten in software anyways (on Linux using a ioctl), the ROM or flash is just for the default. But it really sounds like you have some hardware problem. I would contact whoever sold you the motherboard. -Andi

Did you check 2.6.0-test5 (out since yesterday)? It has an updated tg3 driver that should work with more chips. The tarball from kernel.org should compile out of the box for x86-64 -Andi
I'll give -test5 a try. Good thing it can compile straight out for x86-64. Has anyone notice www.x86-64.org is down for a few days now? Google search doesn't show any x86-64 mirror sites. --- Andi Kleen <ak@suse.de> wrote:

They seem to have name server problems. From SuSE it is still resolvable, but from other ISPs the resolution also fails. Ricardo, any ideas what's happening? -Andi
Thanks Andi for your suggestion. I loaded -test5 from kernel.org on a dual Opteron server based on TYAN Thunder K8S (S2880) and it works fine without much trouble. The tg3 driver is working for BCM5704. Server reboot didn't bring up the interface automatically. Instead it showed a "Can't get a valid interface name --> skipped" error message. Later I manually bring up the ethernet interface. Now the big question is how I can compile the source for other cards, e.g. 3ware, in 2.6 environment? Can I modify the Makefile so it can compile? Cheers, Dan --- Andi Kleen <ak@suse.de> wrote:

For me it works with compiled in tg3.

2.6 already has a "3w-xxx.c" driver included. Perhaps that one will work. -Andi
bcm5700 driver works for me in 2.4 kernel without any extra work. But I had similar problem and question if running 2.6 kernel. Since bcm5700 driver is not part of 2.6 kernel (only tg3) I tried downloading linux driver from broadcom web site. However the compiled bcm5700.o doesn't load in 2.6. I noticed the modules in 2.6 are named after ko extension. How do I load .o module in 2.6? Thanks a lot, -Dan --- "Mike D. Frenz" <mike.frenz@mikerohard.de> wrote:
