I will say, in advance, that I know that this is not /at/ /all/ helpful in answering your question, and may, indeed, win an award for 'Most Fruitless Reply of the Year', but I just got a USB-to-PS/2 adapter and plugged my USB mouse in as a PS/2 Explorer-clone. Since every PC mobo, I know of, has a mouse PS/2 socket on it, I regard a USB mouse in a USB slot as a wasted USB slot (there are so many other things I could be plugging into a USB slot, than a mouse). Wherever there's a PS/2 that'll take a mouse I use the PS/2. On a more helpful note, I /do/ realise what you are struggling with, since I never got the wheel to work properly, with any of the USB-based modules I could find - including a few I downloaded and compiled from source - and I perservered with them, for a good while, before adopting my more prosaic approach.
