SuSe 10.1 Hangs -- Problem Solved

To any concerned: I recently upgraded from 9.3 to 10.1. For some reason, my machine became unstable under load. It would hang and I'd have to hard boot. I never had problems with 9.3. My system is a: MSI K8T800 Master2 FAR 1GB RAM NVidia 5900 Ultra 3 HDs (2x SATA, 1 IDE) and usual accessories I thought it could be a power supply problem, but I have an Antec TruePower 430, so that shouldn't be the case. But, to test it, I removed two of the 4 hard drives and that still didn't help. Then, I salvaged a NIC (3COM) from an old machine and turned off the on-board NIC. That DID seem to solve the problem. So, if you run into similar problems on an MSI K8T800 Master2 FAR, you might want to try that $4 NIC collecting dust in your closet. -- Jason P.S.: Kudos to the SuSe team for a great distro -- great work! -- Jason Vertrees javertre@utmb.edu

Hi, I can't help but I had a similar problem with a double Opteron board. I have identified two problems: - I had to change the PSU (although the first one was supposed to be powerful enough it kept switching off under load. I now have a PSU that has a different power line for the CPUs and the rest of the hardware). - I never could make a card with an NVidia 9660 to works correctly, I would get a full reset OR a compete hang. The machine is working correctly with a 5700... It's interresting to note that both boards use Opterons... Is there a hint? Andi, It's a BroadCom BCM570X. Since I turned it off in BIOS, I can't give you lspci output now. If you really want lspic output, let me know and I'll make a point to get it later. -- Jason On Wednesday 05 July 2006 13:08, Andi Kleen wrote:

What type was the on board NIC?
