include/asm/apic.h:47: warning: value computed is not used
Hi, I'm not sure if this belongs here or on the opensuse mailing list: I'm re-compiling the kernel for OpenSuSE 10.1 alpha4 on both i386 and x86_64 hosts. Works fine on the i386 host, but on the x86_64 host (recompiling the default SuSE kernel for x86_64 with just some filesystems compiled in) I get this error message for almost every file that is compiled: CC arch/x86_64/kernel/time.o In file included from include/asm/smp.h:22, from include/linux/irq.h:13, from include/asm/hardirq.h:6, from include/linux/hardirq.h:7, from include/linux/interrupt.h:11, from arch/x86_64/kernel/time.c:18: include/asm/apic.h: In function â: include/asm/apic.h:47: warning: value computed is not used CC kernel/printk.o In file included from include/asm/smp.h:22, from include/linux/irq.h:13, from include/asm/hardirq.h:6, from include/linux/hardirq.h:7, from include/linux/interrupt.h:11, from include/linux/rcuref.h:36, from include/linux/fs.h:12, from include/linux/mm.h:15, from kernel/printk.c:20: include/asm/apic.h: In function â: include/asm/apic.h:47: warning: value computed is not used ... and so on. Is this something to worry about? An indication that I've configured sth. wrong? Even if it's not serious, can I get rid of this some way to make the log readable again? gcc 4.1 -Wall got pickier again (the gcc developers like to change it randomly) and by chance it hit an often used include file. Should be harmless. -Andi

is harmless, but nasty. AFAIR --- include/asm/apic.h.ORG 2006-01-03 04:21:10.000000000 +0100 +++ include/asm/apic.h 2006-01-10 18:47:37.000000000 +0100 @@ -44,7 +44,7 @@ static __inline void apic_write_atomic(unsigned long reg, unsigned int v) { - xchg((volatile unsigned int *)(APIC_BASE+reg), v); + (void) xchg((volatile unsigned int *)(APIC_BASE+reg), v); } static __inline unsigned int apic_read(unsigned long reg) should fix it. (It's already fixed in newer kernels)
