Good morning, I just joined this list, after browsing the archives for several days --- it seems to be full of knowledgeable people. So here's my question: I'm planning on setting up a dual Opteron workstation. Issue #1: People tell me to wait since AMD will be changing the CPU specs (from 940 to 939 pins) Issue #2: If I don't wait, I' m planning on using a Tyan Thunder K8W (S2885) motherboard, but am not certain on which medium to high end graphics card and sound card (perhaps SB Audigy2) to get? I would like to avoid any compatibility problems.. Any comments? Your help will be greatly appreciated. socket 939 is only for single CPU systems. multi processor opteron will stay at socket 940. -Andi

Well, at the moment Amd64 Opteron (1xx, 2xx, 4xx, 8xx) socket 940 Amd64 FX 51, 53 socket 940 Amd64 2800, 3000, 3200, 3400 socket 754 Socket 939 will appear in the next 2 weeks at Comdex. Opteron will still use socket 940. Socket 754 will co-exist with (new) socket 939 until it gets phased out. If you want a dual Opteron there is no other choice than socket 940.

nVidia, although proprietary drivers, is probably the best choice under linux if you want good 3D at least for games. For high end I don't know. -- Frederic Soulier <frederic@wallaby.uklinux.net>

With as powerfull as any new nvidia card would be, I would be more concerned with what features the card has. 1.)If your going to buy a new video card, There is NO REASON not to buy a "dual headed" card. Most cards will come with both dvi and vga plugs. I would make sure you have the ability to run dual-headed. You don't have to use it, however, once you run 2 heads, you'll never go back! 2.) If you want to be able to watch TV or another video "source", consider getting a VIVO (video-in, video-out) card. It will allow you to (with rivatv) use the nvidia card as a video4linux device. nVidia 5900 XT have a good performance/price ratio (~140 pounds sterling) New nVidia 6800 will be far more powerful (x2) but at ~350 pounds sterling are not cheap! and the current linux nVidia driver probably doesn't support it although nVidia will probably add support for it at the same time they release a driver supporting 4K stacks in the kernel (shouldn't be too long). I have a Sparkle 5900XT in a XP box (never tried it on my linux box) and an Asus Ti4200 (v9280s I believe) in my linux box and it has been playing RTCW pretty damn well! You can probably get a Ti4200 for £50 on eBay.
