As far as I know, this is supposed to work with little or no problems for AMD64bit. (i.e. Suse 9.0 supports the 9600 series) Currently I have the following system running: Thunder K8W + 2x 244's + 4Gb of DDR400 + Twin SATA HDDs Booted of the patch disk and everything is ran smoothly first time... except the graphics driver which does not give 3D support. Now before I go and flash the BIOS or start running diagnostics, is there something I am missing? The 9600 Radeon card is only supported with 2D. 3D support needs the closed source driver by ATI.

A BIOS update will not give you 3D support, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, aj@suse.de, http://www.suse.de/~aj SuSE Linux AG, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

I'm not sure how much of a problem this would be but.... You are running Opteron 244's, which I think do not support DDR400 speed memory. Now DDR400 is backward compatible to DDR333 so that in itself shouldn't be a problem, but I have observed (by snooping in the DRAM controller registers) that the Tyan 1.01 BIOS will program the DRAM controller for 400 Mhz regardless. I observed this with Opteron 240 on a Tyan s2885, BTW. Unfortunately, this BIOS doesn't allow you to specify DRAM timings. :-( My solution (after wasting some time trying to change the registers on an already booted system) was to upgrade to 246's, so I never really knew whether this would be a problem or not. Still, I think the BIOS should observe the limitations of the processor.

Hello, I had the same problem (with radeon 9600). As Andreas Jaeger mentioned 3D Support need a closed source driver by ATI. But at the Moment there is no driver for amd64 systems. NVidia has a amd64 driver for their chipsets. So my radeon 9600 sleeps in the box and I use now a GeForce FX5200. It works with 3D under suse 9 amd64. I hope this helps. have a look at: http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux.html http://www.ati.com/support/drivers/linux/radeon-linux.html?type=linux&prodType=graphic&prod=productsLINUXdriver&submit.x=10&submit.y=8&submit=GO%21 http://www.suse.de/de/private/download/xfree86/ detlef Eugene de Villiers wrote:
