Re: [suse-amd64] problems with abit KV8 pro VIA chipset
thanks mike. i think the solution for the time being is going to have to be buy a network card. followed by trying to figure out why the YAST install looks ok but the final installation has display errors. i'll look through the dvd and see if i can't find where the display settings come from. my graphics card is too new at the moment, even ATI dont have linux support for it yet. i can't wait to get my desktop running, at the moment i'm stuck playing far cry under windows! :) ad. Dear Ad: I have a similar setup to you: SuSE 9.1 running at 64-bit on an AMD Athlon 64 on an Asus K8V Deluxe motherboard with 512 Mgs of RAM and an ATI 9200 SE graphics card. There is a 'how to' in the SuSE support database on a Mute Sound Card. Seems there's a conflict between KsCD and a sound mixer. In terms of the internet, I've seen the machine correctly identify the link and then on the very next boot [ with no changes ], go through the 10, 9, 8. . . . NASA countdown [ and not always finding the link at the end of the countdown!!! ] As to the monitor, SuSE [ and perhaps others ] issue lots of warning about the monitor setting and suggest caution when changing any settings. Is you card listed and are the refresh rates set correctly? My machine experienced memory problems [ it's now in the shop ] and these may have contributed to my experiences. But, other postings on the Asus MB indicate lots of hiccups. SuSE, at the moment, only gives 'partial' support to this board. I don't know if this helps but you're not alone. Cheers, Mike

hello.
i have installed SUSE 9.1 on my new system: ABIT KV8 pro which uses the VIA K8T800 Pro chip set and VIA VT8237 south bridge chip sets. AMD 64 3200 (newcastle) 1 GB (2x512) Corsair value select RAM ATI Radeon x800 pro 2x maxtor 120GB SATA drives
on installation, the system looks fine with the usual YAST installer working correctly and identifying the 2 SATA drives. After installation the configuration seems to go smoothly until reboot.
i had configured the system to boot into run level 3, but with X configured by yast to a frame buffer device with 1280x1024 resolution 16 bit display.
after reboot the "loading" page looks an evil shade of green with corruption around the lizard. The on board VIA Ethernet times out when the network is attempting to set up. (it counts from 20 down to 0 then continues after displaying an error message).
when i get to the login prompt (standard console) i can log in ok. if i then run startx KDE loads ok but the screen colours are all wrong (lot's of blue and cyan etc.) and there is graphical corruption in places.
i have a dial up modem so have run the on line update and accepted all the default packages that were selected by YAST.
when attempting to set up the sound in KDE i can set the volume and play the test sound but it seems to miss chunks of sound. it doesn't leave gaps though, just seems to skip chunks and finish too quickly.
i know there are a lot of things wrong but i would like to have networking and some kind of usable desktop for internet browsing etc.
has anyone experienced any of these problems? if so do they have any ideas as to what i can do to solve them?
thanks, ad.

You can try if pci=noacpi or acpi=off makes the network card work.

It's probably some other problem when you already have corruption during the splash screen. This one just works using the VESA video BIOS and should in theory work even without any driver. -Andi
