install fails with "/dev/ram2: unknown fs type"
Hi list, I have a strange problem. I have an IBM e325 server with two opteron chips on it. We installed SUSE 9.1 on this machine with out any problems and it works great. We just purchased SLES 9 and now we are trying to install SLES 9 on the machine but the install fails. The machine boots and starts the install and gets to the point where it start to load the RAM disk with this message on the screen. "Loading data into Ram disk 57950 KB" Then on the console I see this message Loading image "/var/adm/mount/boot/root" /dev/ram2: unknown fs type mount: /dev/ram2: no such device and right after this I get put on the "Main Menu" of the install program and can not continue from here. Any ideas why Suse 9.1 installs with no problems but SLES 9 does not? We are really happy with SuSe 9.1 but we have to switch to SLES 9 in order to get support from IBM. Thank you for any help on this. Rene

AFAIK SLES9 comes with a support package where you can ask for installation help - so if nobody here can help, look at the support information for SLES.

The e325 should work without problems with SLES9. What exactly are you doing? Booting from CD1 and install from CD? I emailed support using the suse portal but I find I get a faster response from this list. It usually takes a few days even a week to hear back form the portal support folks. Thank you for the suggestion anyway.

I am trying to do an install from CD. Rene

Looks like a broken CD medium. -Andi
Hi list, Have a question about growing a RAID. Here is the setup. I have a RAID 0 or RAID 5 wich to linux shows up as a /dev/sda with 250GB of space. I have LVM and a reiserfs on /dev/sda. Now I put in a new drive on the RAID and grow it to 500BG. So /dev/sda went from 250GB to 500GB. I can't get LVM to see the new size of the drive. I think this might be because I did not use fdisk to create a partition first and just used pvcreate on /dev/sda. Can some one let me know what the best way to support device growth in linux is? I know pvresize is not implemented yet so how would one do this? thank you Rene

You are right that is exactly what it is. We ordered SLES 9 but the CD medium will not arrive for another week and I need to get this installed today. So What I did was download the DEMO CDs from the SUSE www site. I just checked the checksum values and got this md5sum -b SLES-9-x86-64-RC5-CD1.iso eb3271705ab835795a93655481db44a0 *SLES-9-x86-64-RC5-CD1.iso but the suse site says this should be 1fb270a7123895abc846a377c3d1dfdd I will download again and make sure i get the checksums right. Thanks for the help. Rene
