Kernel panic installing Suse 9.0 (amd64) on presario r3000
I'm trying to install suse linux professional 9.0, amd64 edition, on a compaq presario r3000 laptop. When booting from the DVD I get this panic: Real Time Clock Driver v1.10e Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 000000008010ddbf print rip: 000000008010ddbf PML4 0 Oops: 0010 CPU 0 Pid: 0, comm: swapper Not tainted RIP: 0010:[<000000008010ddbf>] RSP: 0000:ffffffff8048dfd8 EFLAGS: 00010246 RAX: 0000000000000000 RBX: ffffffff8010dda0 RCX: 0000000000000001 ... Same with the no-ACPI and safe switches in the menu. I actually got it to start the install process once, but now I always get the panic. Has anyone managed to install 9.0 on such a machine? Any other ideas? M.

My apologies. Didn't see the HP Presario r3000Z. I'll slink off and hide again... Stan

Your BIOS doesn't have a workaround for K8 erratum #93 and dropped the upper 32bits of the RIP. As a workaround boot with idle=poll and disable any "USB legacy" options in the BIOS. Best is if you update your BIOS, otherwise update then to the latest update kernel and remove the idle=poll again. The update kernel will catch this exception, but still burn more power. Best option is to get an fixed BIOS. -Andi
Thanks Andi! Now if I can only get this thing to run at full speed (it currently runs at 800 MHz). Looks like a powermode problem. When loading powernow-k8 I get: amd64-cpuf: version 1.00.06 - August 13, 2003 amd64-cpuf: Found AMD Athlon 64 / Opteron processor supporting p-state transitions amd64-cpuf: BIOS error - no PSB There is no later BIOS upgrade available from the vendor. Any chance of this working better with a 2.6 kernel? M. Andi Kleen wrote:

Actually, yes. There is a patch for 2.6 to add ACPI table based cpu frequency support, which will probably work. It's not in the standard 2.6 tree yet however (but should be soon). The kernel of the upcomming 9.1 has it it. Otherwise a BIOS update adding a PSB table would help again. -Andi

a question regarding the kernel of suse linux 9.1 what 2.6.x and/or what 2.4.x will it come with? any hints or final decisions yet? can we expect a 2.6.5 already or will it be an older one with custom suse patches? thanks. andy

Older one with custom suse patches. However it has most of the 2.6.5 changes included. -Andi
