I set the DVD R RW and the CD-RW to root owned, root group but read, write and execute to world for this kernel release.
It isn't much of a risk since there is only media in it when I am using it.
Actually, that wasn't the DVD problem I was referring to. I meant getting mplayer and xine 64 bit versions to play DVD's. I never could find any pre-built rpm's for all the stuff needed, had to compile everything from source and had tons of problems getting all the right 'configure switches' to make it work. I went months after getting my AMD until I finally got it working, it was a very frustrating experience. Lots of googling, lots of posts to groups like this, and lots of trial and error. Yeah, it's going to be like that for awhile until more and more maintainers get, and get used to, amd64 machines. It'll help when em64t becomes more the norm too.. as much as I'm an amd person, there are those that only buy intel.. so that side will eventually catch up. And when they finally dump the 32bit only hw, that'll help even more. The one benefit of so many a64s getting out there is that 64bit becoming the norm is coming. In fact, we just had another meeting with suse/novell people today and made sure to push that fact to them (that we want all amd64 stuff) and they're listening to us. Of course, the apps we're supporting pretty much all need 64bit, so we're a little different then your average home user. :) One of the huge catalysts would be a game vendor coming out with a game in 64bit that shows big gains from it (should be a lot faster due to use of the larger/more numerous registers).. especially a game that is only 64bit. I remember reading that Carmack (I think it was him) is really itching to make use of the amd64 architecture. That'll be held back until Winxp 64bit is out too.. as much as I hate that. I'm still looking forward to the FarCry 64bit version myself to see if/how much of a difference there is. -- Mike Marion-Unix SysAdmin/Staff Engineer-http://www.qualcomm.com Jimmy: "The job market is very competitive right now for someone with my skills! ...There are a whole lot of kids on summer vacation." -- The PJs.
