[opensuse-amd64] 64-bit Java
Hello all. I am thinking about switching to 64-bit Firefox and use nspluginwrapper. (SuSE ships with 32-bit Firefox to ensure compatibility with binary-only 32-bit plugins, such as Flashplayer.) Perusing the SuSE repositories, I don't see any 64-bit Java plugin but googling around I see that many got their 64-bit Firefox working. I am not sure what they did about the Java plugin. Furthermore, I switched to the 64-bit OpenOffice; I installed it as rpm from the SuSE repositories. If I need to keep 32-bit and 64-bit Java environments, will that confuse OpenOffice when it is told to look for a Java environment? Thank you in advance for your time. c.f. -- Running 64-bit Linux on AMD64 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+help@opensuse.org

Though it has been a long time ago (really too old to use anymore), Blackdown Java had a 64 bit java plugin that did work. I am not sure what they did about the Java plugin. No, it works just fine. It is actually recommended to use the Free Software Foundation version of java that seems to come with OO IIUC. I presently use a 32 bit Firefox with a 64 bit OpenOffice and both 32 bit and 64 bit java installed. The dismal state of 64 bit java plugin and flash plugin after all these years is very unfortunate. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 10.2 x86_64 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+help@opensuse.org
Thank you for your response. I have a couple of questions below. Joe Morris (NTM) wrote:

--Yes, now I remember. The google "hits" mentioned Blackfin. Would the 64-bit Blackfin Java allow interaction with a web site (e.g. chat rooms, many of which are written in Java)? that version of Java?

--I remember reading in a SuSE forum (I am not sure where) that the upcoming OpenSuSE 10.3 will install the 64-bit browser by default. If so, what is SuSE going to do about the Java problem? -- Running 64-bit Linux on AMD64 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+help@opensuse.org
