[opensuse-amd64] Help! newbie: openSUSE 12.1 installation failure
The BIOS has no "uefi" feature. The computer is the HP Pavilion HPE h8-1050z CTO desktop PC. Motherboard is an H-RS880-uATX (Aloe) motherboard, HP/Compaq name = Aloe. Chipset is AMD 785G. RAID: Integrated AMD RAID controller. I will get a Knoppix "live" disk to try booting. How does a person "add nomodeset to the install kernel (ATI graphics) to be able to install"? What is the step-by-step procedure for a somewhat experienced Windows user, but a Linux newbie to do this? Thanks everyone, so far! -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+owner@opensuse.org

Just start typing at the boot menu screen. You will see it on the line below the boot choices. It will be appended to the other boot options. It does seem to fit the scenario, as all my problems with this scenario were also ATI graphics. This is just an initial boot fix for installation. After the install the norm would probably be to add the ATI repository and install the fglrx graphics driver. At least that is what I did. I cannot remember if that means the problem is in the radeon driver or radeonhd (I believe hd), and since I always added the fglrx driver, it works fine after install. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks. That gave me a chance to review the BIOS settings for your board. And I noticed some discrepancies between what you had written earlier and what I saw on the HP web site. You had earlier indicated only 4 SATA ports but the web indicates that this board has 6 ports. Moreover, the web site talks about a SATA1 controller (not just SATA) in the BIOS settings. There may be a difference in board & BIOS revisions, but I wouldn't expect a change in the number of SATA controllers and drive ports for a board that retains the same part number. Unfortunately, the images on the web site aren't high enough resolution for me to see how the SATA ports are identified. Could you provide the exact designation for the ports that the hard and optical drives are connected to? You'll probably have to pull off the side panel and get in there with a flashlight to see them. Based on what I saw on the HP web site, I expect that the hard drive is connected to a port labeled SATA0_x and the optical drive is connected to a port labeled SATA1_x. If that's really the case, I have to wonder why the SATA (SATA1 ?) controller, with only a single hard drive installed in the system, is set to RAID mode. Have you tried setting the SATA1 controller to IDE? I seem to recall that Linux needs to have optical drives running in IDE mode (but I could be wrong, it HAS happened before).
I will get a Knoppix "live" disk to try booting.
If a "live" system boots via a USB drive, but not via optical drive I'd strongly lean towards the SATA controller mode being the problem.
