Intel e1000 on Suse 8.2
Hey there. Im trying to set up Suse 8.2AMD64on a Tyan Tiger K8W motherboard with dual opteron 242s. I have two RAID arrays going on, one off of an HPT37x2 controller, and another off of an SiL 3114 SATA controller. The problem I am having is with the Intel Gigabit Ethernet on-board. During the setup, the card is recognized, and I can give it an IP. After setup, during boot, when it tries to bring the interface up, it fails right away. When I get into Suse, and do an ifconfig, the interface does not appear. Sometimes im able to give it an IP, but I can not ping anything on the network, only itself. I looked for drivers, and found some off of Intels Website. I try installing according to the instructions, but when told to do insmod, it fails with "relocation overflow of type 10". I think this is because it is not a 64bit driver. Anyways, was wondering if anyone has gotten this board or card to work under 8.2. I would like to stick to 8.2, because it is so far, the only 64bit linux that will support both of my RAID cards above. Unless someone has gotten both cards to work under something else like 9.0 or 9.1 Thanks John Barbieri

I have almost your same setup sans off-board raid. The only problem I have had with SuSE 9.1 is with the NICs. I have both the on-board Intel gig as well as an Intel s-100 desktop NIC (I have little use for Intel chips, but I love their NICs). Everything on the install went fine, the initial FTP update went fine, but on reboot I lost both NICs, kind of. I could go into YAST and SuSE saw them both fine, the gig on dhcp and the 100 on static. But I bring up a terminal session and do ifconfig and zilch. The only interface available was lo. It was like the gui saw them but the kernel did not. Weird. I deleted them, rebooted, re-installed, rebooted (sorry, windoze habit) but no joy. Spent hours researching as my boss is yelling (what are you doing ;) Found nothing, so repeated last effort and boom, they showed up in both. Weird. I'm not bitchin' cause everythings working fine now, but this is the only problem I have seen with my 4th install of the 2.6 kernel. Don't know if it's the software or hardware. If they had been different source NICs, I could say it was the kernel, but as they are not, I can't. Lesson learned, don't give up... I have 1 of these on a 32-bit machine, runs AOK under SuSE 9.2 Pro. I had the same problem under 32-bit SuSE 8.2. There is a newer e1000 driver package out there, I *think* you need to get that & use it. I just went ahead to 9.2 since I had already bought it (for 64-bit use).

More detailed response, from another list I am on, in response to my question about this card under SuSE 8.2 (again, 32-bit, YMMV & all that) You might try fetching: ftp://aiedownload.intel.com/df-support/2897/eng/e1000-5.5.4.tar.gz It is supposed to work with 2.4 and 2.6 kernels IIRC.
