[opensuse-amd64] Canon N670U, sane problem
Hi, my system is a brand new opensuse-10.3 (amd64). I have a problem with my scanner (Canon N670U), its impossible to scan something with it. It has been recognized correctly and the correct driver (plustek) is configured. Nothing works, scanimage -T, xsane, and much more, i tried them all, its always the same. The scanner tries to start up with a horrible sound and I have to pull the usb-plug to stop it. Did read a lot, many have the same problem, but no one can offer a solution to it. Did also try to disable the usb suspend function in the kernel, without success, did reinstall, downgrade and upgrade sane, xsane and more, no way. Does anybody out there have a solution? Btw: the scanner works flawlessly with windows. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+help@opensuse.org

I don't have a solution, but I have exactly the same problem! This scanner worked flawlessly with SuSE 9.2, but stopped working with the symptoms you describe with 10.0. I even reported on this list at the time but no solutions were forthcoming. I would reboot back to 9.2 to use the scanner. When I installed 10.1 I figured it would solve the problem and so over-wrote my 9.2 install. Alas, the problem was still there but now I can't go back to 9.2 (easily). The problem lives in 10.2 and 10.3 too. Bummer. The problem has persisted through a total computer replacement and both 32 and 64 bit versions of OpenSuSE. This has to be something going on with the kernel and the USB drivers. The sound the scanner makes is a loud buzz that sounds like the scan-bar stepper motor going back and forth and is of a quality that you know will break something unless you snatch the USB connector out. I tried replacing the scanner with a Canon LiDE 70, only to find that Linux (Sane) doesn't support that model at all! Kooka doesn't work either. Maybe it's time for an Epson scanner? Open YaST and then the scanner module (shell shortcut: "yast2 scanner" :-) and you will see the list of supported and unsupported scanners (if you "Add" one). Unknown scanners (= not in the list) are likely to be too new and might therefore not work. I'm not working on scanners for SUSE, and I don't posses a Canon N670U neither. So I'm not able to give you any hints here. But I think, as this model is being listed as supported, you should open a new bugzilla and report this issue back to our package maintainer. He might be able to help you, or get information back that this kind of hardware is not working. If you're unfamiliar, and you didn't do any bugreports before, you have to create an account at Novells web site (spam free) first, and then report via: https://bugzilla.novell.com/ Regards, Klaus. -- Klaus Singvogel SUSE LINUX Products GmbH Maxfeldstr. 5 E-Mail: Klaus.Singvogel@SuSE.de 90409 Nuernberg Phone: +49 (0) 911 740530 Germany GnuPG-Key-ID: 1024R/5068792D 1994-06-27 SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nuernberg) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+help@opensuse.org

No, it's time for Windows again. Sad, but true. I need this scanner so urgently, there's no other way. I have been using Linux more than 12 years as mail/newsserver, so I'm not quite new. Sad that it always stays behind Windows when it comes to functionality.

The scanner is recognized perfectly and did work with earlier Linux systems, for ex. suse 9.0.

Yes, I'll do that. It's a little bit strange after so many reports which describe the same bug, that nobody has already fixed it. Do a search with Lide20 or N670U, linux and problems combinated, you will find at least 100 reports.

It's a sane issue. This bug should be fixed in the latest cvs, i did try, the bug is no longer present, but now my scanner doesn't work any longer either. Scanimage finds it, xsane does not. Maybe can the suse maintainer soon create an update which adresses the problem, I'm not quite sure if I did install the cvs version correctly. The architecture opensuse-amd64 uses is quite different from what's defined in the makefile. That's one solution.

Sad that hardware rubbish never comes with usable drivers.

The sane people do a good job and engineering drivers for low-end scanners, but I've found the whole package not dependable enough over the years. (It's also not suited for professional levels.) My recommendation is always the same: buy yourself some decent scanning software for Linux from http://www.hamrick.com/vsm.html The software is actively developed with frequent releases. Your scanner is listed as supported. No 64bit version available, but the 32bit version works very well on 64bit Suse (SCSI scanners didn't work on 64bit boxes some while back, but the author fixed it when I brought it up).
