RE: [suse-amd64] Problem installing 8.2 beta 9 on IBM e325
Just in case you haven't tried it: Set Plug and Play OS to "No." Switch MPS 1.1 to 1.4 or (if it's already at 1.4) put it at 1.1 - some boards seem to like one and others, the other). I've seen both of the above cause the problem you describe during Linux installations (with all dual processor systems, not just Opterons). If that doesn't work, and you have a dual disk IDE based system (probably not, aren't all the IBM boxes SCSI?) you could try installing to hdb instead of hda. I had one system with dual IDE drives that came configured with a downloaded version of 8.2, that I decided to try to preserve (as an alternate boot - it was our first Opteron box and I was a bit nervous regarding the software). When the boxed version arrived and I re-installed, the boot record somehow got configured so it would only load off the secondary IDE device (hdb). You could try installing to hdb instead of hda. Maybe the same thing can happen with SCSI systems (I've not seen it) so you'd use sdb instead of sda. Or just do a full fdisk and format of all disks and start from scratch. Good luck with it and keep us posted, Dan -----Original Message----- From: Jean-Christophe Basaille [mailto:Jean-Christophe.Basaille@u-bourgogne.fr] Sent: Thursday, September 11, 2003 3:21 AM To: suse-amd64@suse.com Subject: [suse-amd64] Problem installing 8.2 beta 9 on IBM e325 Hi, we recently got an Ibm eserver 325 with two Amd 242 and 2 GB ram (4x512MB in recommended slots according to the documentation) for testing purposes, and tried to install 8.2 beta 9. We face the same problem that was exposed on the list some time ago (Aug 1st) : After having read the 1st CD, the system tries to reboot, before reading other CDs. But the machine never goes so far. We end with an empty screen just after 'Loading linux.............' (lilo display). We tried too with failsafe, and end with the same message : Starting kswapd bigpage subsystem: allocated 0 bigpages (=0MB) Same thing with grub. Does anybody encountered the same problem, or have an idea about what is going on ?
