Over the past couple weeks I've been noticing my system locking up more and more. I could be in the middle of something and BAM! everything freezes. In looking at the logs, all I see in /var/log/messages is: Oct 7 09:23:40 Sun-linux kernel: hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } Oct 7 09:23:40 Sun-linux kernel: hda: dma_intr: error=0x84 { DriveStatusError BadCRC } The next message has to do with me restarting. I'm running SL 9.1 64-bit on a Sun W1100z. Any thoughts? Tom -- Tom Nielsen Neuro Logic Systems 1.805.389.5435 x18 www.neuro-logic.com

Bad disk sectors? There should be I/O errors logged too then. Use package smartmontools to investigate the disk. Also check for bad cabling and contacts. Volker -- Volker Kuhlmann is possibly list0570 with the domain in header http://volker.dnsalias.net/ Please do not CC list postings to me.

Volker I installed and ran smartctl, but I'm just not sure I did it right. I started rcsmartd, then ran "smartctl -t long /dev/sda" 31 minutes later it finished...I guess.
Results were: === START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION === SMART Self-test log structure revision number 1 Num Test_Description Status Remaining LifeTime(hours) LBA_of_first_error # 1 Extended offline Completed without error 00% 901 - # 2 Short offline Completed without error 00% 883 - Is that it? Am I done? Is there a more complete test? I read the man page but it didn't make too much sense to me. Should I run a more complete test?
