Everytime I try to compile Mozilla Firefox with the -march=k8 flag, the system hangs with kernel errors related to reiserfs. I then installed another disk (a SATA one) and formatted it with ext2 filesystem. After moving the mozilla folder to this new disk the compilation was made with absolutly no problems. I tried to copy the mozilla folder back to the disk formatted in reiserfs and the process hanged again my PC. I have a Asus A8V with a AMD3500+ (130nm) and the hard disk is a PATA Maxtor. I tried with both kernel versions and had the same problem. I'm using now the one that comes in the DVD because the new one have problems with alsasound. Would you please copy us the error messages? Did you try to check whether your disk has problems with reiserfsck (in rescue mode)? AA

Why such a severe kernel error (that frezzes the machine and only a cold reboot can bring it to life) if it's just a filesystem error? Alex
With the filesystem being really the bottom layer of the whole software that runs your computer there is no such thing as "just a filesystem error". Suppose a critical kernel file is affected by a bad block. That will do your kernel in easily. On the other hand, if it were just a simply user file you'd only recognize it by using an application that tries to read or write to that file. You will find corresponding error messages in your logs and it is always good to keep an eye on those in order to spot a disk problem early on to be able to take action before it gets worse.
