Hi all. I installed SUSE 9.3 professional several days ago so I am very new to SUSE. When I logged out that first day after getting everything set up, or so I thought, the only choice I was offered was end session so I clicked accept. This took me to a gray screen with a dialog box for entering user name and password. When I entered those, all it did was take away the dialog box. That is, it left me at that gray screen with no way of getting back into my KDE desk top. so I shut down the computer. When I logged back in, my system opened to that same gray screen with a dialog box for user name and password. When I entered those, once again all it did was take away the dialog box with no way of getting back into my KDE desk top. After several days of trying I gave up and did a complete reinstall. Once the reinstall was complete , I did another logout. This time it offered me the choice to restart, end session, suspend computer, and shut down. I chose shut down. When I logged back on I was once again presented with that same gray screen. This time when I entered my user name and password it logged me into my KDE desktop. However none of the changes I had made were saved, things like my screen resolution etc. So I reset my screen resolution, reset my desired fonts and colors, installed Thunderbird, added a few things to my panel and decided to log off. Once again when I clicked on log off the only choice I was given was "end session". I had no choice but to accept this. Now I find myself right back at that inescapable gray screen. What am I doing wrong and how can I avoid it in the future?! TIA -- LTR }}:{( bulloved@nitline.com

You have installed XDM as displaymanager, just install kdm or gdm. -Dieter -- Dieter Klünter | Systemberatung http://www.dkluenter.de GPG Key ID:8EF7B6C6

I had a simular problem when I installed 9.3. It was several months ago and I don't remember how I fixed it but it was something quick. In the file /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager, whats the value of the variable DEFAULT_WM? It probably should be "kde". Mark
Yes this is a 9.3 problem -- I saw it on two boxes.. Make the /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager change and it will look much better. eric Mark Horton wrote:
