I have always gotten nVidia drivers to work. Some take a little more tweaking than others. From the text below, almost sounds like you don't have your monitor parms large enough. What I mean is, if Sax2 detects a standard monitor, or you specified one like 'standard vga 640x480', then when X initializes the nVidia driver, it will limit what is needed for monitor, for example the resolution may be limited to 8x6 or bigger, or need a higher scan rate.
