RE: [suse-amd64] suse 9.2 install kernel panic
-- Hi there I just had the same problem as Mark refers (Tyan S2882 Thunder K8X PRO, 2 x Opteron 248, 4 x 2 GB RAM modules = 8 GB total RAM ) the SuSE 9.2 installer (DVD just out of the green box) does not boot, not even in rescue mode. I removed 2 RAM modules (= 4GB) out of the machine, then the installer booted OK and I was able to install our loved OpSys. Afterwards, I inserted the 2 modules back again, and the machine did not booted. Actually grub boots the menu screen, but after selecting either choice, total hangt, black screen. I tried the kernel options "mem=4096" and "mem=2048" as suggested in this thread below, but it did not work. Question: Is there a maximum RAM memory that the Kernel 2.6.8.[...] or 2.6.9. can handle? Any Idea? Thanks!! Now that you system is installed with the smp kernel you may be able to remove it. Would be interesting to know if the smp kernel can handle > 5GB of ram. -----Original Message----- From: Mark Horton [mailto:mark@nostromo.net] Sent: Wednesday, November 17, 2004 10:38 AM To: Kevin Wilson Cc: suse-amd64@suse.com Subject: Re: [suse-amd64] suse 9.2 install kernel panic This did the trick. I added mem=2048m to the kernel options and it installed fine. Thanks much. Mark Kevin.Wilson@comtrol.com wrote:
It looks like a problem with RAM amounts > 4GB. I have 4GB installed but ~800 is reserved by the bios so the problem doesn't occur on my system. Enter mem=2048 as a boot parm and see what happens.

Just received Suse 9.2 and I'm getting a kernel panic when I try to install it on my Opteron system. It happens right away, after selecting "Installation". Although I don't see the kernel panic unless I select text install. If I don't select text install the screen just goes blank. I've tried tons of different kernel params, such as turning off ACPI, APM, etc...
I'm using a Tyan S2885 with 8GB ram and 2 x opteron 248 processors. I can install 9.1 and 9.0 fine so I'm not sure what's wrong. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to trouble shoot or solve this problem?
Mark
