Hi there, First of all, I'll state the configuration of the machine: - AMD 64 3200+ 939 on Gigabyte K8-NF9 mobo - on board gigabit ethernet - 2x512 MB ram Kingston - 2x120 GB SATA HD seagate (disk1 for win, disk2 for suse) - nvidia GeForce 6600 LE 256 MB PCX - LG DVD+-R/RW IDE - LG DVD reader IDE - Zoom USB-Bluetooth dongle - Logitech Wireles Desktop EX100 - Philips 170S 17' display - Epson Stylus Color 760 + Agfa Snapscan 1212u attached to usb hub The process of installation was oriented by what I have already read on the list, so I tested graphical install just to try to get the machine frozen. I started with the Patch CD, wich has no problem at all with the SATA disks, and started installation in text mode (I've been told this is what should be done with this configuration). The installation process ends with the reboot of the machine to finish the process, creating root and user accounts, network, and so on. Everything works fine up to network, where onboard is not seen. Passing over that, then SuSE recognizes everything, graphic card, bluetooth dongle, and so on but when I accept the configuration Xserver starts and I get a very weird screen not readable at all. I tried to start up "init 3" mode and touch xorg.conf file changing the driver "nv" to "nvidia" and setting to "true" the options "SWCursor", "NoRenderExtension" and "?EdidFreqs" but I cannot get the Xserver up. Besides, I don't know how to copy the xorg.conf file to the windows drive to attach it to a mail. I presume the windows drive is mounted in /windows and is /dev/sda and suse is /dev/sdb with sdb1 as swap and sdb2 as root (reiserfs). Any help on this will be really appreciated Best regards. Xermán
Hi again, I finally solved the issues of installing SuSE on the configuration stated below. The process should be as follows: 1- Get the Patch-CD from SuSE 2- Get the NVIDIA drivers for the card from NVidia 3- Get the NForce drivers for onboard lan and audio from NVidia 4- Have by hand the SuSE DVD (or CD or whatever) 5- Install SuSE from the Patch CD in TEXT MODE 6- Once installed, the computer restarts to set up root and user accounts, network and so on (network not seen) 7- Xserver will not launch due to nvidia driver, then restart the machine in INIT 3 mode 8- login as "ROOT" 9- Install the NForce and NVIDIA drivers as stated in www.nvidia.com 10- as root start SAX2 -m 0=nvidia (as stated in www.nvidia.com) 11- configure SAX2 and the Xserver will be up 12- configure network throug YaST2 (control center) and that's all. At least that worked for me. One more thing though: Once SuSE was running I did an online update of system and found that once the update was finished I had to reinstall NVIDIA drivers for the video card (steps 7 to 11) I have another minor issues but I presume they are due to my newbie status in linux/suse.
