laptop console video problem
Well, I got the HP zv5000 and LOVE IT! I was able to get SuSE 9.1 on it without too much trouble. Got the nvidia driver working and the widescreen (1280x800) resolution running. I know the boadcom wireless isn't going to work until 9.2 (hint hint hint). I am only having one problem and have one request The problem I'm having is that once X has loaded, I cannot ever get back to a console, virtual or otherwise. I mean I can get to it, I just can't see it. The screen is messed up. Is there a way to fix this? I seem to remember some trouble I had way back when with SuSE 6 something and nvidia where I had to disable the graphical boot screens to stop the issues. Any ideas? The request would be that I remember seeing somewhere that someone was able to enable the touchpad scrolling feature with an aps kernel patch. Anyone heard of this or know where I might find more information? Thanks in advance B-)
Is the terminal really gone, or could the framebuffer be rendering the login prompt 'off' the physical screen? Try dissabling the frame buffer, try switching to runlevel 3, and see if you can boot to non-X. hard to believe the terminals are really gone. they are not gone... I just can't see the text I can login and issue commands like fbset but it doesn't clear up the terminal I can see the terminal and everthing is fine UNTIL I load X Once X has initialized the video card, the fb no longer works I'm thinkin that it has something to do with the difference between X and fb timings If I boot to knoppix, the same thing happens fb works until X loads, then no longer can see the text in the terminals B-) On Friday 22 October 2004 02:08 pm, sean-lynch@sean-lynch.com wrote:

Yes, took me 5 days to figure that one out <g>.

Well, mine's the Athlon XP-M so I was able to get the wireless working using ndiswrapper.

The workaround I'm using is to; 1) boot vga=vesa 2) during the bootup process, BEFORE x starts, press the fn f4 keys. Doing the above makes the problem go away. Now a question for you, did you load the SuSE nvidia driver update and did it work? I'm running with the nv driver, the nvidia one results in a blank screen and a locked up system. Still trying to solve that one.... Scott -- POPFile, the OpenSource EMail Classifier http://popfile.sourceforge.net/ Linux 2.6.5-7.111-default x86_64

Yes, ndiswrapper is 32bit only right now. -Andi
ndiswrapper is 32-bit and won't work in 64. My understanding is that there isn't even a 65bit driver for the xp 64bit beta. B-) On Saturday 23 October 2004 02:25 pm, Örn Hansen wrote:

Hi Scott, This may be totally irrelevant to your problem but I hope it helps :) I had a similar black screen problem (not on a laptop though) which I fixed by first downloading and installing the nvidia driver from http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_amd64_1.0-6111.html YOU always seems to give me an out of date version. My issues were caused by having multiple video out ports and the system picking the wrong one by default. You can start X in debug mode and check through the XFree86.log to see what monitor output it is using by default, mine decided to default to the TV out!! I think the relevant modifications you need to make to the XF86config would be similar to: Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "TV" Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP-0" or in context: Section "Device" BoardName "GeForce FX 5200" Driver "nvidia" Identifier "Device[0]" Screen 0 Option "NoLogo" "1" Option "Rotate" "off" Option "IgnoreDisplayDevices" "TV" Option "ConnectedMonitor" "DFP-0" VendorName "NVidia" EndSection Cheers Ed On Sat, 2004-10-23 at 03:02, Scott Leighton wrote:

I was wondering what that key did, god forbid reading the directions..... hheheheh So, that puts the video to standard resolution eh?

Well, as it turns out, the nvidia update went just fine for me. Worked first time and allowed the 1200x800 resolution. Then, after struggling with the console screen issue for many hours, I decided to look to see what version of nvidia driver the update installed. It was 2 releases old. I decided to try the 6111 for amd64. Installed without any trouble and the console screen issues went away. They must have changed the way the driver un-initializes X to make it ready for VESA. Takes a little bit longer to switch, but the console is now running with nice resolution (even wide) Thanks for the information about the fn - F4 key. B-)

It is working now beautifully! All I had to do was get the new 6111 driver for amd64 from nvidia. Speaking of 9.2... I'd like to use the extra functionality of the synaptic driver for the (APS) touchpad. I saw in the comment from .config file that there are patches to make work with 9.1. Looks too complicated for me. I decided to wait until 9.2 because I believe that kernel 2.6.8 will allow that to work. Do you know if SuSE is going to enable that?
