RE: [suse-amd64] adding a module for new harder- 2.6 kernel
don't feel stupid about having to boot from IDE to get SATA going as making an update disk on your own that actually works is close to impossible. 3ware did come out with theirs recently and it worked charmingly but I still have yet to examine it to see what tweaks they made to get theirs to work at fresh install time. Up until then I had to install SuSE to IDE disk, upload the module source and compile, load the module and update the config files...then I could setup the sda device. Now that 9.2 is out and the 9000 series module is part of the suse supported modules this was all academic as I plan to use 9.2 and avoid the chance of my forgetting to redo the initrd image before I reboot after doing a yast-based kernel update. -----Original Message----- From: Johan Nielsen [mailto:yep@osterbo-net.dk] Sent: Wednesday, November 03, 2004 2:29 PM To: suse-amd64@suse.com Subject: Re: [suse-amd64] adding a module for new harder- 2.6 kernel Onsdag den 3. november 2004 19:43 skrev James D. If none of the other's advise works for you then let me know. I am running the exact same stuff as you are and I have the steps necessary for installing the module (for either raid boot or ide-boot w/ raid mount, etc.) and updating it to the latest kernel using yast without breaking your system since it is not a supported module in 9.1.
Plz ... I even wanna host that guide ... because it's very usefull when you need some support for a piece of hardware and it's not in the current SuSE pack. One feel kind of stupid to (9.1 story) to boot from an IDE to get the SATA going in "enchanced mode" (ASUS P4C800E deluxe). I'm going for the MSI K8N Neo2 board and some of that stuff has just come out resently for kernels later than the one in 9.2 (at least I'm guessing right now). 9.2 just arrived .... so busy exploring on a very old test box :D
Thank you to all who responded. I added 3w-9xxx and scsi_mod to /etc/sysconfig/kernel;
# This variable contains the list of modules to be added to the initial # ramdisk by calling the script "mk_initrd" # (like drivers for scsi-controllers, for lvm or reiserfs) # INITRD_MODULES="sata_sil jbd ext3 scsi_mod 3w-9xxx"
and ran mk_initrd. Since this box is being used to run postgres queries,
I
am waiting for the queries to complete before the reboot.
I'll let you know the result.
Regards,
~James
