Fw: Re: Fwd: [suse-amd64] SuSE 9.3 and Tyan S2895
Thanks Dima for the tip. BTW, now I see both CPUs. However, now I seem to have another problem. While it would seem that I don't need to upgrade the BIOS on this particular machine, I do have another 2895 that has dual-cores, so I would definitely need to upgrade the BIOS. This other machine, though, will use both SATA, IDE and SCSI drives. The SATA are on a RAID card. It seems I will have the same problems as you do? Any suggestions? ________________________________________ Ricardo R Palma SYNOPSIS SA Telef. Make sure you use the 1.01 BIOS for this board as the 1.00 will only work cleanly with apic=off. The 1.01 bios will install 9.3 out of the box nicely.
Actually, v.1.01 is buggy. Depending on how many devices you have, you might , for example, lose SCSI controller (that's what happened to me). I have SATA drives. When I unplugged them, only then BIOS reported SCSI (LSI) controller and prompted to "Ctrl-C" to enter it's setup. Also an error messages popped up during boot (see below). When I complained to TYAN tech support I got this answer: ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Q? Why do I get this error message (Out of space for Option ROMs! The Option ROM for the following device- PCI Mass Storage Controller on Motherboard Bus:0A, Device:06, Function:00 -was unable to run due to memory constraints) after I have updated my bios? A: The Phoenix BIOS Code used in version 1.00 moves the USB initialization to above 1MB memory. This would free up more than the standard 128k memory for Option ROM space. However, a bug was found in this code with the nVidiachipset. Initializing memory above 1MB will cause the USB to not work properly. Current BIOS versions have moved the USB back down to the legacy memory location in the memory range of E0000. This limits option ROM to maximum 128k. Tyan is working with nVidia & Phoenix to fix the BIOS code bug. We will provide a BIOS update as soon as we are able to verify a robust fix. The only current work arounds are to try using a different video card with a smaller Video BIOS or Disable MAC Bridge or SATA Controllers if not used. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Dima. --- Matt Hurd wrote:

3. Any other issue I should be aware of?
I have a similar config with half a dozen machines. Make sure you use the 1.01 BIOS for this board as the 1.00 will only work cleanly with apic=off. The 1.01 bios will install 9.3 out of the box nicely. Also if you have 4GB or more RAM be aware of the PCI address remapping as otherwise the default config will be with 1GB less than you expect of available memory.
Hope this helps,
