Hi, I am new to this list, coming from suse-linux-e group... I have a list of MBs to choose from, but would like to consult some real-life-experienced users before I throw my money away: K8V-X K8V SE Deluxe K8N nForce3 250 K8N-E Deluxe nForce3 250 Pro - all from asustek... I've done a lot of googling, looking through list archives, but could not find exact match of these MBs to SuSE 9.2 (kernel 2.6.8-24.5). I am afraid of some NIC and soundcard problems that I've heard of. Regards & TIA cikasole
Not sure out of those listed but I do know that the Gigabyte K8N Pro all works under SuSe 9.1 64bit. It has the Nforce3-150 chipset. The Nforce3-250 should work the same. Nforce seems to work very well for 64bit. Brad Dameron SeaTab Software www.seatab.com On Tue, 2004-12-14 at 07:02, Radule Soskic wrote:

Well that truth has some modifications. with MSI K8N Neo2 54G (Uses Nforce3-250) I can tell that sata_nv goes into some kind of self spin with SuSE 9.2 and goes blind on those drives (had drives on all 4 sata ports on that board to check). Just watch the thread I started the 2'nd of december !! Johan

Hi. I'm having a MSI K8T Neo2-FIR at home (VIA chipset). I found hardware problems, but they are USB only: the USB mouse doesn't always work after the power is switched on (but no probs if connect via PS/2 adapter) and the internal 10-in-1 USB card reader has problems either (reading SD cards and with the Mic connector). At the moment I think this the USB problem is introduced by a to weak power supply. Using a 400 Watt power supply and still not enough. :( No problems with anything else. But as I said before: its my personal PC at home and I dont let it run 24/7. :) Regards, Klaus. -- Klaus Singvogel SUSE LINUX Products GmbH Maxfeldstr. 5 E-Mail: Klaus.Singvogel@SuSE.de 90409 Nuernberg Phone: +49 (0) 911 740530 Germany GnuPG-Key-ID: 1024R/5068792D 1994-06-27

I have a similar board, Neo2-FISR, Via chipset. I run mine at home and it does run 24/7, cable modem, never gets turned off unless I am doing some hardware work. No problems at all, though I have just started using 64-bit. I am interested in the USB problems as I also have some issues there: VMWare guest refuses to recognize USB port with Palm. Sees others, just not that one, not even with with little cajoling I am capable of. I have Enermax 431W PS. Could that be a problem? Not enough? How would I figure this out? I have seen some messages during booting process about "...over current charge..." on USB port 5. Actual messages follow: <3>hub 5-0:1.0: over-current change on port 5 <3>hub 5-0:1.0: over-current change on port 6 <3>hub 5-0:1.0: over-current change on port 7 <3>hub 5-0:1.0: over-current change on port 8 Is this saying my PS is weak? I always assumed PS was ok, but did not understand these messages. I queried the suse-linux-e list once or twice about these messages, but got nary a bite. While my googling skills leave much to be desired, I found nothing relevant there either. I have also had issues with USB not recognizing printer when hotplugged but I have a work-around, suggested by above list, and while a nuisance, it does work. Any thoughts? Thanks for considering, Richard

Well, it was more or less luck and still only assumption. I reconnected my USB mouse from a far away connector to a closer one to get more freedom through a longer cable. :-) But I then I realized that my mouse didn't work any more, and that even in the BIOS phase the red light for the optical sampling isn't working anymore. Therefore I assumed that this USB hub hasn't enough power. Using a different USB hub showed that in half of the time the USB mouse was working. But when connecting the mouse to the PS/2 port, the red optical light gets suddenly stronger than ever before... I also have problems with the nvidia graphic drivers in such a way that they refuse to start the X11 system because the power check fails. Sometimes they dont have this problem. I cannot predict this behavior (maybe depending on the room tempretature?). I'm having a 400 Watt power supply in my PC. And its not so good to hear that you have a 431 Watt power supply and still problems. Thanks for looking at this. While I am no hardware guru, I can see where you would suspect power supply. I think mine is really listed at 465W, 431 minimum or conservatively rated, something like that. I think my printer issue is software/hotplug related, not PS. The "...over-current change..." messages during boot still bother me, and I have not seen an explanation that really says what this is, or how to fix it, if it needs fixing. In any case, I have not seen any other issues that would lead me to suspect an insufficient PS. Richard

I don't know if it is available for you, but we've had good luck with the ASUS SK8N. We are running all of ours with 4 gb ram, but are not using SATA. Best, Mike On Tue, 2004-12-14 at 12:03, Brad Bourn wrote:

Were you able to get the pata ports on the Promise controller to work? On my SK8N, 2 ports are sata, 2 are pata. Joe Mike Brown wrote:

Gigabyte GA-K8NS Pro with nForce3-250 chipset. I had problems getting a stable install with both 9.1 and 9.2. Not just Suse either. Mandrake and Gentoo also. Gentoo was actually pretty stable, but more trouble than I wanted to go through to get what I wanted. I decided to try a 9.2 install with acpi turned off. Install went perfect and I haven't had a bit of trouble since (well, a little nVidia graphics driver trouble, but got it worked out). It has an on board IDE, SATA, IDE raid, and SATA raid. I can't comment on the raid (I have them disabled) but I do have a hard drive (windows), cd rom, and dvd writer on the ide and a single sata drive that I boot from with linux installed on it. If I needed to set another box, I wouldn't hesitate to use this board again. Doug
Hi , Did anyone install Suse 9.2 Pro x86_64 with memory more than 4GB. I got a problem on Suse 9.2 Pro x86_64 installation if memory more than 4GB. The system no display when system start to load Suse installation . This issue not occurs if memory less than 4GB. and not occur on Suse 9.1 Pro x86_64. I got a success installation if add mem=2048 to boot parameter. Anyone know why ?? What was the problem with gentoo? I'm running it on a 32-bit box and it seems to be the easiest to get things going on, I've currently got an upgrade to 2005.0 going, completely hands off. Is the x86_64 build more troublesome? Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce .... Hamradio G3VBV and keen Flyer =====LINUX ONLY USED HERE=====

No real problem. It just didn't have the look and feel I'm used to. Fonts weren't as nice as I'm used to. I'm sure that with the proper knowledge and time, it could be made to look as good or better than any other distro, I just didn't want to invest the time (although I probably would have if the last 9.2 install hadn't gone so well). I like the idea of gentoo and may pursue it further when other things settle down for me. I did a 32-bit stage 1 that went well (2.4 kernel if I remember right). I tried a x86_64 stage 1 and couldn't get the 2.6.9 kernel to boot (I didn't take the time to look into it). I then tried a x86_64 stage 3 with packages. It used a 2.6.? (<2.6.9) and that went well including updating world (except for kernel). I only ran the install for a few days, but it seemed solid. Doug
