[opensuse-amd64] Some problems after upgrading to 10.2
Hl all. Finally, I bit the bullet and upgraded to 10.2 (64-bit). I was expecting I would have to reinstall a few packages, such as MPlayer and the nvidia drivers, so I don't count them as problems. The problems I am seeing are two: (1) For some reason, rpm seems to consume over 99% of the CPU time. I have to kill it manually. (2) If I invoke yast from inside KDE as a normal user, yast does not seem to recognize the root password, but if I su to the root account from the command line, the very same password is recognized (as it should). Any ideas? For some reason, when i do a "rug ref" from the command line, or use the "zen-updater" from the kde desktop. It takes several hours to complete. Running "top" I noticed that "parse-metadata" seems to be the first job, followed by "update-status". They both seem to consume a lot of CPU. I have opensuse 10.2 x86_64 running on my AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3400.

Is this the rpm command itself? Not seen this before.

This is usually caused by using the yast sudo module. There was an online update to fix the problem in the yast sudo module. The simplest solution is to set kdesu to use su instead of sudo by saving [super-user-command] super-user-command=su as ~/.kde/share/config/kdesurc See the bug report at https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=223719 for more information. _ Benjamin Weber --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-amd64+help@opensuse.org

I no longer see this problem. I will not claim that zmd was the cause of it ("post hoc, ergo proper hoc" --after the fact, therefore because of
Thank you for taking the time to respond to my questions. Your suggestion fixed my problem with kdesu. Thank you! Below I comment on each of the two topics: Benji Weber wrote: the fact-- a common logical fallacy), but I have a strong suspicion that this problem (rpm consuming over 99% of the CPU time) was somehow related to zmd.

--A big "THANK YOU!" Your suggestion fixed my problem. I did visit the bug report, but everything there seems so convoluted! Your suggestion was very clear and to the point (and taught me a few more things about KDE, too!).
