SiI 3114 S-ATA controller is doing progress
Hi, today I found a driver for the Silicon Image 3114 S-ATA controller that seems to work with SuSE 9.0 for AMD64. The driver can be downloaded from the Tyan site (unfortunatley not at the Silicon Image site), the URL is ftp://ftp.tyan.com/drivers_linux/Silicon_Image/3114/SuSE90AMD64RAIDDriver/ So far I tried out the following with my dual Opteron workstation: - Booting SuSE 9.0 for AMD64 from a parallel ATA harddisk. After modprobe scsi_mod and modprobe sii6514 I'm able to access the one S-ATA harddisk on channel 0 as /dev/sda. - Installing SuSE 9.0 on the S-ATA harddisk connected to channel 0. That requires a bit of extra work as described in the text files that come with the driver. And it means that you're forced to use LILO as the bootloader. The next steps I'm trying to do soon is getting 4 S-ATA disks and setting up a RAID with them to find out what the driver does. The bad news is still, that the driver is only available as binary, that means it will work with Kernel 2.4.21-102smp that comes with SuSE-Linux 9.0 for AMD64, but I expect serious problem when I want to upgrade to Kernel 2.6.1 for example. Anyway, I hope that helps a bit for the people with Tyan mainboards and S-ATA disks. :-) Best regards Rainer -- Dipl.-Inf.
